Read More	LAWRENCE HENRY TURNER, B.A. was born in Hestleton, Durham, England on June 25, 1899. He was ordained in 1934 in Westminster Central United Church, Toronto. He passed away on May 23rd 1971 at Lambeth, Ontario. His parents were James Turner, Durham, England, Taxidermist, and Mary Ann Mannell, Cornwell, England. His brothers were Jim, Will, Tom, Lawrence, and Albert; His sisters were Margaret, Bessie, and Rose Ellen. He was married on June 29, 1935 to Grace Bernice Connell in Victoria College chapel. their daughter Grace Marie was born in Exeter, Ontario in 1941. After elementary school at Hestleton, Durham, England he worked in the coal mines from 14 to 24. In 1923 he came to Canada alone as an emigrant and worked in the harvest fields in Saskatchewan on a Harvester Excursion. In the Fall he returned to Toronto and became acquainted with Rev. W.G. Aldridge at Silverthorne United Church. He conducted an area church membership survey for Mr. Aldridge. He also attended Collegiate where within two years he completed requirements for Matriculation at Oakwood Collegiate where he won a proficiency scholarship. He sang tenor in the Choir. Returning to Toronto he completed three years in Arts at Victoria College. He continued in the Theological Course at Emmanuel College. He was ordained in 1934 on June 10th, his mother's birthday, at Westminster-Central United Church where Rev. Dr. J.R.P. Sclater was minister. Rev. Dr. Hiram Hull was President of Toronto Conference, Rev. G.W. Barker, was Secretary. His first charge on ordination was at Matheson, Northern Ontario in 1934. His charges in succession were: ENGLEHART (1935-39) - CREDITON (1940-44) - GODERICH, Victoria Street (1944-50) - NEWCASTLE (B of Q) (1950-54) * KINGSTON (Cookes) (1954-55)- WESTMINSTER (WEST) (1955-58) - MERLIN (Fletcher and Wesley) (1958-62) - WARDSVILLE (Newbury & Cairo) (1962-66) - 1966-71. Returned to Lambeth, Ontario. During his retirement he preached at LONDON(CALVARY) September to June. 1968-71 ST. THOMAS (FIRST). Mr. Turner has one brother living JAMES at Peterlea, Durham, England, and one sister MARGARET SEYMOUR, at Consett, Durham, England. Mr. Turner was a thoughtful, sincere, devoted person, with the spiritual interests of his congregations at heart. Even in his retirement he kept up an active interest and service in the Church. He was a good example of what can be done by a lone emigrant, by dint of interest, application and effort, in Canada, a land of privilege and opportunity. Canada is richer for such citizens as Lawrence Henry Turner. We pay our humble tribute of thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Turner and the members of her family. May the rich blessings of a generous Heavenly Father continue to be your comfort and reward. Burial services were first held at St. Thomas (FIRST) by Rev. H.M. Hunter, Rev. Darwell Welsh of Empress U.C., and Rev. W.H. Morden, President of London Conference. A further service was held at Spencerville United Church by Rev. S.E. Oakwell. Interment was made at St. Andrew's Church Cemetery. "Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." Rev. R.B. Cumming.
