Description	:	OBITUARY: Rev Leonard Mitchell, beloved rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Nebraska City, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, after a heart attack at his home in the church rectory. Bishop Howard R. Brinker, Omaha, will be in charge of funeral services at the church, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. Read More	OBITUARY: Rev Leonard Mitchell, beloved rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Nebraska City, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, after a heart attack at his home in the church rectory. Bishop Howard R. Brinker, Omaha, will be in charge of funeral services at the church, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. After the services the body will be taken to Neligh, Neb., for burial Tuesday afternoon. The body will lie in state in St. Mary's chapel until time for the funeral. The casket will not be opened at the services. Pallbearers will be J.C. Thygeson, Frank Hall, Martin Schmaus, Max Werner, N.A.S. McLean and John Pfann. The attack struck Saturday evening as Rev Mr Mitchell completed preparations to conduct important Whitsunday services in St. Mary's. He had been ailing for some time and planned to take an extended vacation following the services. He came to Nebraska City in February 1938, succeeding Rev W. A. Cave as rector of St. Mary's. During his pastorate here the church flourished. Many improvements, including dedication of a new organ, were made to the building. He represented the Nebraska City Ministerial association in arranging Holy Week services here last spring. Before Coming to Nebraska City, Rev Mr Mitchell served congregations in Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Nebraska and Kansas. He was ordained by Bishop C.D. Williams at Detroit and served his first pastorate at Zanesville, O. He had churches in Portland, Ore.; several in Texas before going to Neligh, Neb., in 1926. He was chaplain and taught at St. John's Salina, Kas. Son of Mr and Mrs A. Mitchell, he was born at New Straitsville, O. He received his A.B. degree from Kenyon college, Gambier, O., and his theology degrees from Bexley Hall in Gambier. He studied at Ohio Wesleyan, Boston University and was working on his doctor's degree at Northwestern. He was particularly interested in social sciences and psychology. At one time he did considerable social work in Chicago through Northwestern. He worked under Bishop Brinker, then in charge at St. Bartholomew's in Chicago. He married Florence J. Babcock on June 11, 1934, at Yankton, S.D. Mrs Mitchell, a brother, John Mitchell of Detroit and a sister, Mrs John Call, Sr., of Columbus O., survive. Rev John Putt, Griggsville, Ill., a close friend, will assist Bishop Brinker in the funeral services. Burial will be in Laurel Hill cemetery at Neligh. Among persons from out of town expected to attend the services are Clara Swain, Yankton, S.D.; Mrs Margaret Barber and Mrs Gail Skinner, Chicago; Mrs Chester Poulton, Harrison, Mich.; John Mitchell, Detroit; Mr and Mrs Edward Miller, Detroit; John Call, Jr., and Mrs John Call, Sr., Columbus, O. FACTS: -In 1924 he assumed his duties as acting pastor at St. James Episcopal Church, leaving his assistant rector position at "The Little Church Around The Corner." -Once served as principal speaker at of the Exchange Club Luncheon. -Once served as a guest speaker at the religious meetings regularly held at the Y.M.C.A. -Took extended tours of Europe. -Preached his first sermon at St. James Episcopal Church on a Sunday morning at 10:30. -His books and notes are with his niece's family today. (Jacob M.- Leonard's niece's great, great grandson). NOTES: Leonard is my third great grand uncle, and seemed to be a remarkable man based off of everything I've found through my research.
