Description	:	DIED - In this place [Amherst NH], on the 26th ult. at his father's house, Rev. LEVI HARTSHORN, of Gloucester, Mass. aged 30 years. Mr. Hartshorn, accompanied by his family, had just completed a short visit to his friends in this place, and was preparing to leave them on his return, when he was arrested by the disease which terminated his life. Read More	DIED - In this place [Amherst NH], on the 26th ult. at his father's house, Rev. LEVI HARTSHORN, of Gloucester, Mass. aged 30 years. Mr. Hartshorn, accompanied by his family, had just completed a short visit to his friends in this place, and was preparing to leave them on his return, when he was arrested by the disease which terminated his life. He was ill about eight days, on the first of which he preached to his people, to the no small injury of his feeble health. He was interred on the 30th, with the solemnities which are usual on similar occasions. The church in Amherst, of which the deceased had been a member, acted as the representative of his bereaved church. The remains of Mr. H. after prayer at the house of his father by Rev. Dr. Burnap of Merrimac, were carried to the meeting-house, and thence after divine service to the grave, preceded by the male members of the church in Amherst and members of other churches, and followed by relatives, female members of churches, and numerous citizens of all denominations. The religious services of the occasion were commenced by an appropriate dirge. The first prayer was by Rev. E. Smith of Holles; the sermon by Rev. N. Lord of Amherst, from Acts 8,2; and the concluding prayer by Rev. H. Moore of Milford. A solemn and appropriate anthem by the choir concluded the exercises. Mr. H. was greatly and most deservedly respected and beloved in this place, and the proof of this ws manifest in the sorrowful and affectionate performance of his funeral rites. The loss of such a man as Mr. Hartshorn cannot easily be estimated or repaired. His afflicted family, the church and people of his charge will feel it with peculiar sensibility; but it is a loss of real worth to the community at large. The decease of a faithful minister of the gospel takes something from the general stock of knowledge and true virtue. It weakens the foundation of society. "Help Lord, for the godly man ceaseth, for the faithful fail from among the children of men." We shall endeavor to furnish some biographical sketch of Mr. H. by obtaining extracts from the sermon preached at his interment. [The Farmers' Cabinet, 2 Oct 1819, page 3]
