A previous transcription from another researcher was edited for content. Fairfield Ledger April 7, 1897 Page 3 Col. 3 Found Dead in His Room. Ludwich (sic) Gift was found dead in his room at the Park hotel, Ottumwa, Thursday morning. He had complained of a slight illness for several days previous, but his condition was not considered dangerous. When he failed to respond to the usual calls in the morning his door was broken open, and his body was found lying on the floor with life wholly extinct. A physician and the coroner were summoned, but the indications were so positive that he had died from heart disease that no inquest was held. The remains were brought to this city Friday, and were interred in the City cemetery by the side of those of other members of the Gift family. Rev. J. A. Boatman had charge of the funeral services. Mr. Gift was a son of the late George Gift, sr., was born at McConnellsburgh (sic), Penn., and was in the sixty-sixth year of his age. With his parents he came to the county in 1849 and remained here until 1861. After spending a year or two in Mahaska county, where he was married to Eliza J. Ornbaum,her removed to the Pacific slope, making his home in Washington and Idaho until his return to this city in June, 1896. He was the father of five children. One met death by accidental drowning, while the other four perished from diphtheria within a period of nine days. The wife passed away about five years ago. Mr. Gift was in the grocery business in this city for a short time last year, and about two months ago purchased an interest in the Park hotel and removed to Ottumwa. His death will be very generally regretted by old friends who knew and esteemed him for his many excellences. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church from early manhood, and since 1860 had been a regularly licensed preacher of that denomination. He was a thoroughly religious man and his honesty of purpose and zeal in his labors made him very valuable in the church. A sister, Mrs. John McWhirter, survives him in this city.
