Nixon Potts was married to (2) Helena Irene Lipscomb (spelling of given name varies in records) on 7 Mar 1855 in Preston County,* West Virginia. They were the parents of at least 5 children: Sarah (abt 1856), Phebe J (abt 1847), Amanda (abt 1868), Nixon (abt 1870), and Lucinda (abt 1874). Nixon Potts served as a circuit-riding Methodist preacher in West Virginia before joining the Union Army during the Civil War where he served as chaplain in the West Virginia 6th Infantry Regiment. Following the war, he moved to Scotland County, Missouri. His given name may be the surname of his paternal grandmother Mary (Nixon) Potts, wife of John Potts, probably the original Potts immigrant. Further research is needed. The 1870 U.S. Census places two Nixon Potts of approximately the same age in Scotland County -- one in Miller Township and the other in Union Township. Were there two different Nixon Potts living in Scotland County at that time? Any additional information that would help solve this mystery and correct any mistakes given in his biography above would be appreciated. * Note Harrison County, West Virginia was formed from Monongalia County in 1784, prior to Nixon Potts' birth. Some records place Elizabeth Ann Wilson's birth in Monongalia County, but it is more likely she was born in Harrison County, but lived in an area that was once Monongalia County. His marriage to Helena Lipscomb in Preston County was also in a county adjacent to and formed from Monongalia County.
