A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Blessed Sacrament Church, Waterloo. There will be a visitation at the church on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Father Geary, formerly of 2817 Roxboro Drive, Ames, donated his body to the University of Iowa Medical School, Iowa City. He was born on May 6, 1929, in Oelwein, son of John and Josephine (King) Geary. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, Oelwein, in 1947, he attended Upper Iowa College for a year. He then transferred to Loras College, graduating in 1952, whereupon he entered Mount St. Bernard Seminary. Following the completion of his theological studies, he was ordained to the priesthood on Feb. 4, 1956, at St. Raphael Cathedral by Archbishop Leo Binz. Father Geary’s first assignment (1956-1958) was as assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Rockwell; St. John Parish, Cartersville; and St. Lawrence Parish, Swaldale. He then was assigned for a year to the faculty of Loras Academy, Dubuque, and as assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Maquoketa. He served on the faculty of Columbus High School, Waterloo, from 1959 to 1964, and the faculty of Newman High School, Mason City, from 1964 to 1975. He was a member of the Team Ministry, Mason City, from 1972 to 1975, and the Team Ministry, Ames, from 1975 to 1977. From 1977 to 1980 he was the pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors, Festina, and the director of the School of Religion, Calmar. He served as pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and the Catholic Student Center, Ames, from 1980 to 1987; pastor of St. Columbkille Parish, Dubuque, from 1987 to 1993; and pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish, Waterloo, from 1993 until his retirement in 1999. While pastor of Blessed Sacrament, he served as dean of the Waterloo Deanery from 1997 to 1999. Fr. Geary is survived by a sister-in-law, Florence Geary of Cedar Falls; two nephews, James Geary and John Geary; two nieces, Mary Jo Geary and Elizabeth Wilson; four great-nieces and two great-nephews; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Jack, Jim, Tom and Bill Geary; and sister, Mary Engen. Memorials may be given to Unbound (formerly known as Christian Foundation for Children and the Aging). On his funeral liturgy planning sheet, Fr. Geary wrote: “I thank my God and my Church for allowing me to be a priest and for the gracious patience showered upon me as I stumbled in ministry. If I have assisted anyone in their knowledge and love of God, I look forward to sharing that knowledge and love with them forever.”
