Paul B. Porter, D.D., of Hastings were held at the Evan United Brethren church at 10:30 o’clock Tuesday morning. Rev. Porter died on Saturday after suffering a stroke late Thursday. A capacity crowd of old friends from many congregations, pastors and their wives from over the state, members of the Aurora ministerial association, individuals from many parts of the state who had been members of his church, and long time associates from Aurora, York and Merna filled the church and overflowed to the lower Fellowship Hall for the services. The floral tribute was beautiful and abundant. Clergymen officiating included the Rev. Donald Nunnally, host pastor; the Rev. D. R. Roker D. D., district superintendent; the Rev. Doyle Hays, pastor of the church in Hastings, and Dr. John Wichelt. W. H. Menzie of Hastings, close friend of Rev. Porter who was his choir member in Aurora for almost a quarter century sang “O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go,” and the vested choir and congregation sang a favorite hymn “My Jesus I Love Thee” Mrs. C. L. Whitney Sr. accompanied at the organ. She played the Hallelujah Chorus at the close of the service. The Rev. Mr. Nunnally read the 23rd Psalm and other scriptures followed by prayer. The Rev. Mr. Roker offered prayer and the sermon was presented by the Rev. Mr. Hayes. He chose as his text the first three verses from the Third Chapter of Paul’s second letters to the Church at Cornith. “It is not my intention to eulogize Dr. Porter, you are doing that by your presence here. His influence through the years is manifested here.” Rev. Hays said "How Christian Are You?” asked Rev. Hayes Jesus’ definition is that a Christian is a New man in Christ What kind of an influence do you exert? Is the world a better place because you are a part of it? These were among the challenges presented by Rev. Hays. Casket bearers were all close friends and his Aurora parishioners during his residence here They included Lyle Shaneyfelt, Charles Whitney, Walter Stratton, Kenneth Herrold, Dallas Luthy and Royal Christenson. Paul Banta, son of William L. and Otie Banta Porter was born near Culbertson, Nebr., July 5, 1890, and died in Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings on September 26, 1964, after a brief illness. After high school he enrolled in York College from which he graduated in 1915. That fall he was assigned to the United Brethren Church in Swanton and was pastor there until 1919. On June 26, 1918, he was united in marriage with Nina Francis, and to this union four children were born. One son died in infancy. He entered Bonebrake Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio in 1920 from which he received the Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1923. He was pastor of the Merna Church from 1923 to 1929, of the York Church from 1929 to 1934, and of the Aurora Church from 1934 to 1958. He was granted the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from York College. He was a member of the United Brethren Commission on Church Union and Federation for 13 years until the union with the Evangelical Church was consummated, served as secretary of the Nebraska Conference of the U. B. church for 27 years, member of the Aurora City Council for 10 years. He was a member of the Aurora Lodge No. 68 A.F.& A.M. and of the Aurora Rotary Club, which gave him a life membership at the time of his retirement. In 1959 he and his wife retired to Good Samaritan Village, where he had leisure to pursue his many hobbies and there he found many opportunities to be helpful to his neighbors. His greatest joy was the preaching of the Gospel and he continued to preach many times for his own and other denominations. Survivors include his wife, sons Don of Denver and Warren, minister in Oxnard, Calif., and one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Frances) Emerick, missionary in Miraj, India; eight grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Manley (Mabel) Fisher, Blair, Mrs. J. B. (Bellma) Hunt, Hastings, Mrs. N. A. (Otie) Ress, Seward, and Mrs. I. B. (Louellin) Nelson, Lincoln, and a host of friends. The Highby Mortuary in Aurora was in charge of arrangements.
