Description	:	He was son of James Allen and ?. He was a boy of more than usual thoughtfulness and enjoyed religious privileges. In October, 1811, while apprenticed to a blacksmith, he experinced a radical change of heart and at age 19, after a struggle back from death's door, he yielded his life to the Lord and began holding a revival meeting at Northfield, where 35 were converted. Early in 1820 he traveled and preached in Burlington, St. Albans and other towns in VT. In 1821, he visited Rhode Island, reaching Burrillville on horseback, Oct. 13, for the organization of the RI Quarterly Meeting. The next day he preached the sermon at the ordination of Daniel Green, the first Freewill Baptist ordination which took place in the state. His labors were prolific in Vermont and Rhode Island. On May 5, 1824 he married Phebe Leonard, of Taunton, and the next Dec. became the settled pastor of the Pawtucket church, while keeping care of other churches as well. He labored in North Scituate, where a church was soon organized in about 1829, and for twelve years he divided his time between Greenville and North Scituate. The Smithville Seminary was at North Scituate and the church increased to over 400, nearly 100 being baptized in one day. In 1845, he resigned the pulpit, and though residing there, labored extensively in other places. He gathered and organized a church at Coventry. For five years before his death, feeble health and failing powers confined him largely to his home. He died with scarcely any premonition, May 30, 1872, aged nearly 78 years. He did excellent pioneer work among the Freewill Baptist churches in Rhode Island. He baptized 1400 converts, attended over 1600 funerals, solemnized about 650 marriages. As a preacher, he was bold, earnest, and scriptural. With a constitution by nature robust, whatever he did he did with his might. He represented RI in the Second General Conference at Sandwich, NH, in October 1828. The Fourth Gen. Conf. was entertained in Oct. 1830, by the church of which he was pastor at Greenville. His first wife, Alice A.G. Sanborn, of Northfield, N.H. lived but a short time. His second wife, Phebe, the mother of his family, died in 1864. His funeral was attended by 500 from all the neighboring towns and Providence. His companions in the work spoke on the occasion, and Rev. Mowry Phillips preached the sermon.
