Description	:	The Rev. Robert Alexander Hallam, D.D., who died at his residence in New London on Thursday last, was a native of that city. He was graduated at Yale college in 1827, and studied theology at the General Theological Seminary in New York. For over thirty-five years he continued... Read More	The Rev. Robert Alexander Hallam, D.D., who died at his residence in New London on Thursday last, was a native of that city. He was graduated at Yale college in 1827, and studied theology at the General Theological Seminary in New York. He was for a short time a rector of St. Andrew's church, Meriden; and on the 1st of January, 1835, he became rector of St. James's church, New London, a parish honored in the history of the diocese of Connecticut as having been for eleven years under the immediate care of Bishop Seabury. For over thirty-five years he continued in the active and efficient discharge of the duties of his ministry in New London, until, in 1870, he was physically disabled by a stroke of paralysis. His rectorship, however, continued until within the past year, when, it being evident that he would never be able to resume his official duties, he was retired as rector emeritus. Dr. Hallam was one of the most highly honored and respected of the clergy of the Episcopal church in Connecticut, having been for many years a prominent member of the standing committee of the diocese and a deputy to the General Convention, in which last-mentioned body he was more than once honored with the chairmanship of the committee on the state of the church. The noble church edifice in New London, finished in 1850, wil be an enduring monument to his labors for the parish. A constant student of the Bible, and a ready and ingenious writer, Dr. Hallam's sermons and lectures were always interesting and instructive. A volume of his "Lectures on the Morning Prayer" was published not long after 1850; this was followed by a volume of "Sermons" in 1865(?) and by "Lectures on Moses." in 1869(?), his history of the church in New London was written and published a few years since. Dr. Hallam's honorary degree in divinity was conferred upon him in 1853 by Trinity college, of which institution he was a trustee from 1843 till the time of his death.
