SAMUEL WHITING received his early education from his father, and afterwards finished his education for the ministry under the direction of Rev. James Fitch, of Norwich, there being no College in Connecticut. He was the first minister of Windham, Conn. In a record kept by him, (now in possession of one of his descendants in Hartford,) he says, "I preached my first sermon at Windham, from the first verse of Genesis, on the first day of January, 1692-3." "I was ordained at Windham, on the 4th day of December, 1700. Rev. Mr. Whiting died at Enfield, while on a visit to his cousin, Rev. Nathaniel Collins, September 27, 1725. (Mr. Collins was also his brother-in-law, having married Alice Adams the sister of his wife.) He married at Norwich, September 14, 1696, Elizabeth Adams, daughter of Rev. William Adams, of Dedham. She was born at Dedham, February 21, 1681, and died December 21, 1766. Her mother was Alice Bradford, daughter of Deputy Governor William Bradford, and granddaughter of Governor Bradford of the Mayflower. The widow of Rev. Samuel married in 1737, the Rev. Mr. Niles of Braintree, Mass., and on becoming again a widow, May 1, 1762, went to New Haven to live with her son, Col. Nathan Whiting, and died there December 21, 1766. -Juliane Montgomery Burbach] [Rev. Samuel Whiting of Windham, Conn., was born at Hartford, April 22, 1670, and died at Enfield, Conn., September 27, 1725. He studied for the ministry under Rev. James Fitch of Norwich, there being no college in Connecticut. In 1692 he was called to be the first minister at Windham. As an inducement he was promised £50 anuually, and a dwelling to be eighteen feet square and two stories high! He was ordained at Windham December 4, 1700, and his salary increased to £100 with a supply of fuel. He married September 14, 1696 Elizabeth Adams of Dedham, Mass. They had thirteen children: 1) Anne Whiting, January 2, 1698, m. Joseph Fitch. 2) Samuel Whiting, February 20, 1700, lost at sea 1713. 3) Elizabeth Whiting, February 11, 1702, died September, 1730, unmarried. 4) William Whiting, January 22, 1704, lived in Norwich. 5) Joseph Whiting, February 17, 1705, died unmarried. 6) John Whiting, February 20, 1706, lived in Windham. 7) Sybil Whiting, May 6, 1708, m. John Backus, Jr. 8) Martha Whiting, March 12, 1710, died June 29, 1719. 9) Mary Whiting, November 24, 1712, m. Rev.
