Ferree, Mr. Thomas Middleton. Father Middleton was one of the early pioneers of Iowa; one of the class of men to whom our State owes much for the sterling integrity and religious faith they brought with them from the east and planted them on her new, rich soil. Mr. Middleton was born in Center county, Pennsylvania. He emigrated from there in 1834; traveled in a one-horse wagon with his wife and five children. From there he came to Washington county, Iowa, in 1840, where he is very well known. He was a local minister in the M. E. church for over forty years; helped to organize the first M. E. class west of Crawfordsville. For seven years his house was a preaching appointment. He lived in Mahaska for fifteen years. He has passed through many hard trials and under them all lived a consistent, humble, Christian life. Five, out of eight, of his children were present at the funeral. Rev. Horner preached the funeral sermon from the words, "If a man die shall he live again?" to a large concourse of friends. He went "as a shock of corn - fully ripe."
