Obituary of Tillman E. Drewett DIED: From lightning stroke, at his house in Winn parish, La., on Monday, June 22d, 1885, Elder T. E. Drewett. It is with sadness and sorrow that it has become our lot to record the sudden death by lightning stroke, on June 22d last., of our friend and brother (in Christ) Elder T. E. Drewett. The particulars as they are handed to us are about these: On Monday Elder Drewett was engaged at his well, helping his wife to draw water, assisting in washing etc. His wife had stepped a few steps from the well to hang out some clothes; while he remained at the well carrying water to a tub under a large oak near by. Just at this time the flash of lightning came and shivered the oak; striking Eld. Drewett also, near the head, and passed down his body. The lightning tore his hat into atoms; and also bursted his shoes. His wife was stunned also by the lightning shock, but soon recovered. Mr. J. W. Shelton happened to be near the place, and hearing the screams of his wife and children, went to their assistance. Elder Drewett was reared in the parish of Winn. He began life in the Baptist ministry when he was about 20 years of age, in which he has ever been a faithful servant of the Lord, beloved by all who knew him. He was yet a young man, about 32 or 33 years of age; and promised a life of usefulness; which he had been up to the day of his death. Many have been the times that we have met Bro. Drewett at the old Central Association, that we love so well; and on many other occasions we have enjoyed his company; but that is only to be now a happy reminiscence of the past. He is gone from among us. When we consider that Bro. Drewett was a young and very useful man to his church and people; his death appears to be one of those mysterious ways of Providence, that are past finding out; but the Lord knoweth, and doeth all things well. He leaves a heart-stricken wife and 5 children, father and brothers, and a host of friends, to mourn his loss. To all of whom we tender our condolence and sympathy, in this hour of their bereavement. ............................................ Drewett deceased, on the first Sunday in September, at Sardis Church, 8 miles south of Winnfield. .................................................... Womack, called on the Sentinel on Monday last, on his return from Sardis Church, whither he had been to preach the funeral sermon of Eld. T. E. Drewett, deceased. He reports a large and attentive congregation, at that place. He also reports that he, assisted by Elds. S. Deen and L. D. Emmons, has just closed an interesting meeting at Harmony Grove Church, a considerable revival had taken place, and 5 accessions to the church. (Michaels Drewett's Note: Tillman E. Drewett was the son of W. H. Drewett and his first wife Lathame. His brothers were John T., William J., and half brother A. Henry Drewett. His wife was Susan Francis Martin Drewett, and their five sons were Levi E., Ira V., William U, Aaron T., and Thomas J. He was born May 9, 1851 in Mississippi, and he is buried in Sardis Cemetery, Winn Parish.)
