He was the son of Balaam Mauldin and Susannah Gresham Mauldin. He was married to Elizabeth Featherstone Gaines Mauldin on January 14, 1838. Tyre and Elizabeth had five children: Mary Susannah Mauldin (1841 – 1881), William Patton Mauldin (1845 – 1928), James Andrew Mauldin (1845 – 1924), Francis Elizabeth Mauldin Carpenter (1847 – 1883) and Joseph Henry Mauldin (1849 – 1850). Tyre Balaam Mauldin was a man of many talents and of strict religious principles. He was a local Methodist preacher who supplied the Methodist Church at West Union where he lived for several years and served as postmaster. He also preached occasionally at the old Rock Springs Methodist Church and was instrumental in the building of Center Methodist Church. On July 13, 1847 in the West Union Methodist Church, Rev. Mauldin performed the wedding ceremony for Joseph E. Brown and Elizabeth Gresham. Joseph E. Brown was the Civil War Governor of Georgia from 1857 to 1865 and a U. S. Senator from 1880 to 1891. He was a surveyor by vocation. In December 1849, he surveyed a tract of land known as the Falls Tract, containing 5,889 acres, within which the town of Walhalla, South Carolina was developed. In 1850, he made a survey and plot of the town of Walhalla, locating the streets and lots practically as they are today. The town contains a street named for him; Tyre B. Mauldin Street. As was written about him, “He was a man of many parts, this early Methodist preacher, surveyor, mill-wright and miller; blacksmith, builder and farmer; postmaster and preacher, but most of all and all the time a Christian.”
