Description	:	Vernon Erickson, age 92, of Miles City, formerly of Conrad, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 22, in Miles City. Vernon Dwight Erickson was born on Sept. 6, 1916, the seventh son of Erick and Jensine Sina (Hamre) Erickson, on a wheat farm near Conrad. During his high school years, he left the farm following his older brothers eastward to attend Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn. Following his graduation from high school, he studied at Augsburg College graduating with a RA degree in history. Read More	Vernon Erickson, age 92, of Miles City, formerly of Conrad, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 22, in Miles City. Vernon Dwight Erickson was born on Sept. 6, 1916, the seventh son of Erick and Jensine Sina (Hamre) Erickson, on a wheat farm near Conrad. During his high school years, he left the farm following his older brothers eastward to attend Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn. Following his graduation from high school, he studied at Augsburg College graduating with a RA degree in history. Loving music, the violin and piano were his favorite instruments and he played them daily. During his high school and college years, he was a member of a male quartet traveling and performing concerts throughout 38 states from coast to coast. He also sailed across the Atlantic Ocean touring Europe where the quartet sang every night for 3 months and performed 3 concerts every Sunday. Interspersed with singing their favorite gospel songs, each quartet member presented public testimonies of their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This quartet performed over 1,000 concerts during their eight years together. Those years sharing the gospel through songs inspired Vernon to pursue two more years of theological training at Lutheran Brethren seminary in preparation for the pastoral ministry. During his days at Augsburg College, Vernon fell helplessly in love with the lovely Eleanor Rollins and married her on Nov. 7, 1942. Following his graduation from seminary, he and Eleanor moved to Mayville, N.D. to pastor the Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren church. In subsequent years, his ministry took him to the Rock of Ages Lutheran Church in Seattle, Wash. In 1950, he enjoyed the honorable distinction serving as chief staff counselor for Dr. Billy Graham’s crusade held in Seattle. He went on to pastor California churches in Pasadena, Vallejo, Fresno and San Francisco. Eleanor passed away in 1972 and Vernon later married Helen Christman. During his “retirement” years, he was called to serve additional Lutheran Brethren congregations in Great Falls, Platte, S.D., Williston, N.D., Portland, Ore., and finally ending his ministry years at the Rock of Ages church in Seattle, Wash. During his pastoral ministry in the San Francisco Bay area, he was actively involved in radio talk-show, answering callers having questions about the Bible and God. With sixty-four years in the ministry, he once said with no regrets “I’m so thankful having the privilege spending my entire life preaching the gospel.” For him, publicly preaching the gospel was life’s highest calling and indeed his strong passion. But hidden from the public was also his daily private ministry of prayer. He enjoyed being alone with His Lord and Savior faithfully interceding for the salvation and spiritual growth of his parishioners and everyone he knew. Helen passed away in 2004 and then Vernon moved to Miles City to be close to his daughter due to failing health. Vernon is survived by his sons: Ron Erickson of Seattle, Wash. and John (Terri) Erickson of Augusta; daughters: Becky (Jerry) Coon of Miles City and Judy (Jim) Shuman of Hartville, Ohio; step-daughters; Norma Greyn of Billings and Peggy (Glynn) DeVries of Conrad; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, his wife Eleanor, wife Helen, and his eight brothers and one sister. Vernon was loved and respected by all who knew him. His passionate love for the Lord, his love of music and prayerful concern for people will always be remembered by his family and friends. As he makes his triumphant entry to heaven, may God bless the memory of Vernon Erickson. Graveside services were held on Dec. 3, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Hillside Cemetery in Conrad.--The Independent-Observer (Conrad, MT)
