Butzke (as printed in the Polk Progress 03-29-1956) Son of Mr. Ferdinand Butzke and his wife, Caroline, nee Braasch, was born at Ashippin, Wisconsin, on January 7, 1872, and was baptized on January 26, 1872 by Pastor George Link in Immanuel Lutheran Church at Lebanon, Wisconsin. He was confirmed on October 22, 1885, by Pastor Max Albrecht. He was graduated from the Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois in June 1894. His first call was to Millard, Nebr. He was ordained on Sept. 23, 1894 in Millard, Nebr. By the Rev. Wm. Huseeman of Papillion. At Millard he preached and taught school five days a week for ten months of the year for nearly six years. In August 1900 he followed a call to Zion Congregation at Luce, Nebr., and here too in addition to his preaching he taught school four days a week for ten years. The Immanuel Congregation of Polk, Nebr., then called him in June 1911. He was installed on the first Sunday in July 1911 and served the congregation until his retirement in August 1936. He had labored in the vineyard of the Lord for 42 years, the last 25 years at Immanuel in Polk, Nebr. He retired to Seward, Nebr. where he established his home in September 1936, and became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church there. Pastor Butzke was married to Miss Anna Degner of Norfolk, Nebr., on July 18, 1894. In a letter to his children he writes: “Our wedded life was a very happy one and the Lord blessed us with 11 children, 4 of whom died in infancy, and one daughter, Victoria, died at the age of 12 years.” Mrs. Butzke preceded him in death succumbing to a heart attach while in Milwaukee for a funeral on May 11, 1940. Pastor Butzke passed away in his home in Seward, Nebr. on the morning of March 24, 1956, having reached the age of 84 years, two months and 22 days. He is survived by his children: Mrs. Martha Wasserman, Seward, Nebr.; Walter Butzke, Renton, Wash.; Mrs. Adela Nicolaus, Julesburg, Colo.; Mrs. Meta Zwick, Staplehurst, Neb., Ruben Butzke, Whittemore, Ia., one sister, Mrs. Emma Ziemer, Ixonia, Wis., eight grandchildren, and fourteen great grand children. Numerous donations for charitable and benevolent purposes have been lovingly dedicated to his memory. Services were held at Seward and at Immanuel Lutheran of Polk, Tuesday, March 27 and burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Six grandsons were pallbearers.
