No estimate of the immense amount of good that comes from a long, active and useful life like that of Rev. William Edwin Stanley, the well-known minister of Eldora, Hardin county, can be made, for it is far-reaching in its effects and will continue through coming generations, like the "light that shines more and more unto the perfect day." Few lives have been so unselfish, so pregnated with good deeds and so controlled by an insatiable desire to be kind and beneficial to his fellow men, but notwithstanding the unbounded influence he wields in moulding public opinion and of the high tributes of praise freely accorded him by a vast horde of admirers wherever he is known, he is entirely unassuming and unpretentious, content in the thought that he is continuously putting forth his best efforts in following the footsteps of the lowly Nazarene. Rev. Mr. Stanley is the scion of a sterling old New England family and he himself was born in the town of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, September 28, 1844. He is the son of Sylvan and Susannah (Frye) Stanley. The Frye family came from the north of Ireland, and after the siege of Londonderry, in which they took part, emigrated to the United States, locating in New Hampshire, with others of their countrymen, which colony founded Londonderry in that state. In the year 1700 they located at Andover, Massachusetts, and from these early colonial days to the present members of this family have figured more or less conspicuously in the development and progress of this country in various avenues of endeavor. Col. John Frye, the maternal great-grandfather of the subject, was an officer under Washington from July 4, 1775, to November, 1783, all through the Revolutionary war, rendering most faithful and efficient service in all the noted campaigns and battles in which the great leader took part, such as crossing the Delaware, at Valley Forge and many others. The Stanley family originally came from Derbyshire, England, emigrating to America about the beginning of the eighteenth century, locating at Boston. During the war for independence the subject's great-grandfather Stanley was a public officer of the town of Attleboro, Massachusetts, and had charge of the prisoners and those who would not take the oath of allegiance to the colonies. With the blood of such ancestors in his veins, it is no wonder that, although a mere boy, William E. Stanley should offer his services and his life, if need be, in defense of the old flag when the tocsin of war sounded in the early sixties, and he proved to be a very gallant soldier, according to his comrades, as a member of the Fourth Heavy Artillery of Massachusetts, which was assigned to the Twenty-second Army Corps. He was honorably discharged from the service on June 16, 1865, and on May 23d of that year he was present at the Grand Review in Washington City. Returning to his native state, Mr. Stanley entered Phillips Academy at Andover, Massachusetts, where he made a splendid record and from which institution he was graduated with the class of 1869. Turning his attention to the ministry, he pursued a special course of study for a year, then entered Newton Theological Seminary and was a member of the graduating class there of 1873. He at once entered upon his career, having been called to and ordained in the First Baptist church at St. Cloud, Minnesota, July 31, 1873, and his work has since been confined for the most part to the Middle West. He was the pastor at Red Wing, Minnesota, in 1876, at Troy, Ohio, in 1879, at Austin, Minnesota, in 1882, at Winterset, Iowa, in 1891. In 1892 he was appointed financial secretary of Des Moines College, and in 1893 he was called to Atlantic, Iowa, and to Eldora in 1900. For five years he served as department chaplain of Minnesota for the Grand Army of the Republic, and since 1900 he has been chaplain of E. C. Buckner Post, Iowa department of the Grand Army of the Republic. During his pastorate at Eldora, the new Baptist parsonage, a large, attractive and modern dwelling, was erected. He is president of the lecture court committee of Eldora, which has been a success for nine years. He is trustee of the Eldora Public Library and chairman of the book committee. Fraternally, he is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Rev. Mr. Stanley is quite actively interested in public affairs, taking the part of a good citizen in public measures and reforms; strong and alert, energetic and persistent, he has marked influence for good in his community. He is independent in politics. In all the pastorates he held during his active ministry he was popular and built up the congregations, strengthened the work in all its departments and won his way quickly into the affections of his congregations. He is profoundly versed in theology, a scholarly, high-minded, whole-souled gentleman, fearless and tireless as an investigator and he has the courage of his convictions. As a pulpit orator he is surpassed by few, always logical, forceful, earnest and often truly eloquent, never failing to interest and instruct his audience on whatever theme he chooses to discuss. Truly, he is a born leader of men. The happy and harmonious domestic life of Rev. Mr. Stanley began on November 22, 1877, at St. Cloud, Minnesota, when he was united in marriage with Anna Estella Spicer, of that city, she being the representative of an influential and highly honored family there and a lady of culture and refinement. This union has been blessed with three children, living: Jessie L. married T. S. Ford, of Chicago; Mamie L. married A. W. Crane, superintendent of schools at Belle Plain, Iowa; Florence M. is an art instructor in Central Wesleyan College at Warrentown, Missouri. They were all highly educated and are popular wherever they are known, reflecting in their daily lives the wholesome home atmosphere in which they were reared.
