Andrew was born 14 September 1773, and his Huguenot surname was spelled differently on virtually every document, indicating probable illiteracy. Rufus was the brother of Enoch Lumry and may also have been brother to Lucius Lumereau, the husband of Eunice Lumereau, née Brigham. Reverend Lumry was a prominent abolitionist circuit preacher and church organizer in the Wesleyan Church after splitting with the Methodist Episcopal Church over slavery. He was a founding trustee of the Illinois Institute, later Wheaton College, one of the first institutions of higher education in Illinois to admit African-American students, under the leadership of fellow adoptive Princetonian John Cross and, later, Lucius C. Matlack. Cross and Lumry also worked together to found Amity College (1855-1913) in College Springs, Iowa. The Bureau Township Community Church records contain the following entry: "May 28, 1859 - Collection taken to pay expenses of Brother Lumry for attending to removal and burial of James E. Burr, from Princeton to Wheaton on April 28, 1859." Burr had requested to be buried in a place where Rufus could be sure that no one who had supported slavery or had had slaves would be buried near him. Burr is buried in a solo grave on the campus of Wheaton College. An associate of Liberty Party activists Zebina Eastman and Ichabod Codding, Lumry made an apparently unsuccessful run for the Illinois General Assembly in 1844, the year the party's state convention was held at Princeton. Rufus's son Andrew served in the Colorado legislature. Rufus discovered the murdered body of J. Dunlap in early August of 1837. Reverend Lumry died of hypothermia or, according to alternate reports, drowning when he got caught in driftwood in Cache Creek near Granite, Colorado, returning from a winter expedition to help people thought to be caught in the mountains. His death and burial are mentioned in the autobiography of Rufus' associate John Lewis Dyer, a fellow Methodist circuit rider and one of the 16 founders of Colorado depicted in stained glass in the dome of the state capitol. Elizabeth "Betsy" Delamater married Rufus around 1817. She was born July 7, 1801, in Rensselaerville, N.Y., and died on September 15, 1846, at Princeton, Illinois. Her father was John Delamater, born 18 February 1771 at Valatie, Columbia Co., N.Y., and died 6 September 1848 at Westerlo, Albany Co., N.Y.; and her mother was Mary Eaton, born 30 January 1779 at Valatie and died 4 October 1848 at Westerlo. Betsey's resting place is unknown. She had a sister with the same name, born 10 June 1797 and died 1 August 1799, both at Rensselaerville. Betsy was also a sister of Mary Ann Johnson, née Delamater. Rufus is the subject of a biographical sketch in the American National Biography published by Oxford University Press. He also has an entry in the Cyclopædia of Methodism edited by Matthew Simpson and published in Philadelphia by Everts in the 1880s, in which member of Congress, Congregationalist minister and fellow Princetonian Owen Lovejoy is quoted as saying: "Lumry is a sharp thrashing instrument having teeth, wherewith the Lord thrasheth slavery."
