Description	:	Rex L. Smith died from complications with a respiratory disease at Arbor Home Rehabilitation Center in Mesa, Ariz., on Feb. 26, 2006. He was 70. Mr. Smith was born to David W. and Lola Lee Smith in Waukee, Iowa on Sept. 10, 1935. He graduated from Waukee High School in 1954. After graduation he worked as a heavy equipment operator on construction sites before moving to southern California where he met his future wife, Carolyn K. McNew. The couple was married in 1957. Mr. Smith was born to David W. and Lola Lee Smith in Waukee, Iowa on Sept. 10, 1935. He graduated from Waukee High School in 1954. After graduation he worked as a heavy equipment operator on construction sites before moving to southern California where he met his future wife, Carolyn K. McNew. The couple was married in 1957. They moved to Iowa then returned to California. While there, he continued working construction and sold Mac tools. He was baptized in 1972. In 1968 the family moved to Oregon and shortly thereafter relocated to Wallowa County where he worked as a log truck driver, long haul truck driver and rancher until his two sons graduated from Joseph High School. The couple left Wallowa County in 1985 while he pursued work as a trucking dispatch terminal manager with locations in Portland and the suburbs of Denver, Colo. As an employee of Smithway Motor Express, he made record sales over the course of 15 years in a territory spanning nearly one quarter of the nation. While living in Colorado he started his own trucking dispatch company that he operated for about 10 years until his retirement in 1998. During their retirement the Smiths enjoyed trips around of the southwest in their RV as well as trips to Mexico. In 2003 they bought a home in Woodland, Wash. and continued to travel during the winter months. Rex was an avid NASCAR and NFL football fan and enjoyed sightseeing, hunting and fishing as well as attending rodeos. Survivors include his wife Carolyn, son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Judy Smith and their children, Austin, Brittany and Brandon of Clackamas and son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Carol Smith and their daughters Cassandra and Carly May of Fairview, his brother and sister-in-law, David and Vernice Smith of Waukee, Iowa. He was preceded in death by sisters Ethelyn and Alice Lee of Iowa. Wallowa County Chieftain 4/6/2006
