He died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-four. Rex was born near Harlan, Iowa and received his education in the Harlan Schools. When Rex was eight years old, he became very ill and was diagnosed with spinal meningitis. He amazed his doctors and overcame his illness. During his childhood, Rex enjoyed hunting with family and friends with their greyhound dogs and horses. As a young man, Rex met "the love of his life," Irene Andresen. While Rex and Irene were dating, he always escorted her to dances and the movies wearing a suit and tie. On June 26, 1943, Rex and Irene were married at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with the birth of four children. He held several jobs throughout his life, including working at the Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper Plants in Denison, driving a truck, and owning his own custom corn shelling business. Rex also worked on the construction of Farmland Foods, and also was employed there from 1962, until his retirement in 1981. In his spare time, Rex enjoyed fishing, collecting John Deere tractors, and was an avid stock-car racing fan, having attended many races. He was also a childhood friend of NASCAR driver, Tiny Lund. Rex was a kind and gentle person, always ready to lend a hand with a smile. He was a friend to many and loved by all. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Denison. Rex was preceded in death by his parents, one son, David B., one grandson, Dan P. Schroeder and one sister, Dorothy Munson. Survivors include his wife, Irene of Denison; two sons, Donald Littleton and his wife, Deb of Denison; Dennis Littleton of Crystal Lake, Illinois; one daughter, Deanna McCullough and her husband, Tom of Vail; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Alberta Ervin officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Nancy Miles provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Larry Boeck singing "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "How Great Thou Art". The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Methodist Women. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
