Rex was born on November 4, 1921 at Lamar, Nebraska, the son of Joseph Alexis Elder and Newella Aurilla Corning Elder. Rex attended school in Palisade, Lamar and Imperial, Nebraska. Rex was inducted into the United States Army on August 13, 1942, and served in the South Pacific. He was discharged on November 4, 1945. On January 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Irene Hageman. To this union five children were born, Gary R., Kenneth L., Jim R., Rex Jr. and Barbara A. Rex spent his life as a mechanic. He and his family lived in Holyoke with the exception of the years from 1968 to 1978. During that time, they lived in Rifle. Rex loved his flowers, the garden, hunting and fishing. Rex is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Orval, Roy, George, Keith and his twin, Lex; sister, Wilma; and and infant son, Rex Jr. Rex is survived by his wife, Dorothy Elder of Holyoke; sons, Gary R. and his wife Lwana of Arvada, Kenneth L. and his wife Ruth of Rifle, Jim R. and his wife Dorinda of Montrose; daughter Barbara A. Bahler and her husband Mike of Memphis, Tennessee; sisters Agnes Mather and her husband Paul of Sidney, Nebraska and Jennie Banaka and her husband Harold of Wray; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Rex Newell Elder were conducted on Saturday, November 11 at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating. Interment followed at Holyoke Memorial Park.
