He was born January 29, 1920 in Alliance. His parents were Herla Owen and Bessie Wright Mullender. He graduated high school in Alliance in 1938 and attended Northwestern University and UCLA. Read More	OBITUARY FROM THE ALLIANCE TIMES HERALD, 10 FEBRUARY 2000 REX RALPH MULLENDER, 80, of Loveland, Colorado died Thursday, February 3 at North Shore Health Care Facility. He was born January 29, 1920 in Alliance. His parents were Herla Owen and Bessie Wright Mullender. He graduated high school in Alliance in 1938 and attended Northwestern University and UCLA. He joined the US Army-Air Force in 1940 and served during WWII. He was a prisoner of war for 3 1/2 years. He was in the march on Bataan and was the last of 10 survivors of the 22,000 prisoners. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Congressional Medal of Honor. He married Alberta Taylor in 1957 in Hollywood, California. She preceded him in death in 1986. He then married Alida Vanderplatt on July 28, 1990 in Loveland, Colorado. He was a member of the First Christian Church and active in the men's group. His survivors include his wife, Alida Mullender of Loveland, Colorado; step-daughter, Gail Vorreiter of Sun City West, Arizona two step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, LeRhea Gange and Gail Grove of Scottsbluff. Memorial services were at 10 a.m. February 9 at the Allnutt Hunter Chapel. The Rev. David Grousnik and the Rev. Graham Rinehart fo the First Christian Church offciated. Burial was held in the Loveland Burial Park. A memorial has been established. Donations may be sent to the First Christine Church in care of Hunter Chapel, 2100 North Lincoln Avenue, Loveland, Colorado 80538. Allnutt-Hunters Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. ============================================================= ARTICLE FROM ALLIANCE TIMES HERALD, SEPTEMBER 28, 1945 REX MULLENDER FREED FROM JAP PRISON CAMP---IS ON WAY HOME Rex Mullender, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.O Mullender of Alliance, is on his way home after nearly three and a half years as a Jap prisoner of war. First word of his liberation was received by his parents in a letter from Rex written aboard the hospital ship, USS Consolation. A medical technician in the Army Air Force, Rex was taken prisoner with the fall of Bataan on April 6, 1942. Rex informs his parents that he is in good health, weighing 168 pounds. Naval doctors have given him a thorough examination and report his condition as "good". Going overseas in October, 1941, Mullender was stationed at Rizal hospital, Fort McKinley, near Manila when war broke out. He was taken prisoner with the fall of Bataan April 6. First held prisoner in cams No. 1 and 13 in the Philippines, Rex was transferred to a camp on Shukoku Island on May 19, 1944. Mr. and Mrs. Mullender received two cards from Rex while he was on Shukoku and a letter written by Rex was read by the Red Cross on the radio program, "Postman calling" from Japan. The government telegraphed the Mullender's letter, and 18 persons conveyed the message to them. May 31 a message was received over the same program by friends at Spokane, Wash. Rex also check six form cards while held prisoner in the Philippines. Art Chenowerth of Jennings, Kansas, a close friend of Rex, has written the Mullenders of Rex since returning to the U.S. after liberation from a camp in the Philippines. He was taken to Walter Reed Hospital on his arrival in the States, but the Mullenders believe he will be able to come to Alliance for a reunion with Rex. A graduate of Alliance High School with the Class of 1938, Mullender was captain of the High School band his senior year. He attended a business college in Denver 1938-39 and was inducted into the service Oct. 1, 1940. Before being sent overseas he received training at McCord field, Washington; and Fort George Wright, Spokane, Washington.
