Many passages were read and thoughts expressed that brought comfort to those in sorrow. The beautiful words of the solo, "Leave It With Him", taken from the twelfth chapter of Luke, were sung by Mrs. Ray Lounsberry of Nevada. A men's chorus composed of members of the Kiwanis Club of Roland sung a special arrangement of the hymn, "My Heavenly Father Watches Over Me." The organ music of Mrs. Otto Hanson lent further sacredness to the atmosphere of the service. The many floral tributes and memorial offerings expressed the devotion felt by hosts of people. Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. LaVern Jacobson, Mrs. Mervin Smith Jr., and Mrs. C. P. Thompson. Prior to the church service, Pastor Nelson conducted a prayer service in the home. Gary Bates and Marge Rullestad of Shipley, former students of Mrs. Hughes, sang an appropriate duet, "I'll Walk With God," accompanied by Mrs. E. P.Schindler. Interment was at the family plot in the Pleasant Grove cemetery. Brothers of the Masonic Lodge of Nevada conducted Masonic rites at the grave. The casket bearers were Logan Bibby, Carroll Jacobson, Overt Holland, George Larson, Kenneth Long, and Elmer Paul. Obituary Rexford William Hughes, son of Charles R. and Minnie C. Hughes, was born on a farm near Kelley, Iowa, September 13, 1909, and passed away at the Story County hospital, Nevada, Iowa, at the age of 48 years, one month, and 14 days. He grew to manhood in Boone county, where he was graduated from the Luther Consolidated High School. He attended Iowa State College and Iowa State Teachers College. He was united in marriage to Edna Godfrey on September 3, 1933. To this union six children were born: Norman Rexford, who passed away April 27, 1944; Dale Servigna, a junior at the University of Oklahoma; Loyd Charles, Norene Muriel, Linda Louise, and Karen Edna, at home. Following his marriage, he farmed in the Luther vicinity until 1936, when the family moved to Milford Township, Story County. For him, farming was a profession. The present farm home, puchased in 1937 during the depression, is evidence of this. He was a member of the Methodist church and served on the official board for many years. A keen interest in the welfare of others led him into a wide variety of community activities. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, and Roland Kiwanis. He enjoyed travel with his family. Together they visited all 48 states, Canada, Nova Scotia, Alaska, and Mexico. These trips were enjoyed again and again as he shared his large collection of pictures with his friends. A man of deep religious faith and firm convictions based on his study of the Bible, he accepted his long weeks of suffering with a calm and courageous spirit. The many friends who visited at his bedside found him always ready to share in their activities and interests. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Edna; five children; his father, Charles R. Hughes; one sister, Mrs. Pat Nolan; and a brother, Kenneth, all of Story city; many other relatives, and a host of friends. ---from the Roland Record
