She was born April 28, 1925 in Nelson, Nebraska the daughter of James F. and Mary (McCutchan) Murphy. Rhae graduated from Nelson High School and from Lincoln Business College in Lincoln, Nebraska. Read More	Rhae Elaine (Murphy) Thayer 86, Abilene, Kansas, died Tuesday December 27, 2011 at the Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. She was born April 28, 1925 in Nelson, Nebraska the daughter of James F. and Mary (McCutchan) Murphy. Rhae graduated from Nelson High School and from Lincoln Business College in Lincoln, Nebraska. On March 1, 1945 she married Jon Dale Thayer of Nora, Nebraska. Jon was serving in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, so they were married in Rhae's parent's living room in Nelson. To this union three children were born: Jon D., Teresa and Jill. The couple made their home in Forest Grove, Oregon for 3 years, in Belleville, Kansas, for 41 years and then in Abilene, Kansas, for 19 years. Rhae was a life long member of the United Methodist Church, first in Belleville, then in Apache Wells, Arizona (where they wintered for 19 years), and later in Abilene. She served twice as UMW President and received the Church Women's Special Mission Recognition Award three times. She was an active member of her church; singing in the choir, playing in the bell choir, attending circle and Sunday school and serving on committees. Being concerned more with the welfare of others, especially the poor or needy; Rhae volunteered at the Dickinson County Food and Clothing Bank, for the American Cancer Society, and worked on 13 VOSH trips to Central America, where she and Jon distributed glasses for the indigent. Her favorite Beatitude was "Blessed are the Peacemakers", which speaks to her quite, serene, and loving nature. Rhae's concern for the welfare of others will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband Jon, of the home, her son Jon D. (Joan) Abilene; daughters: Teresa (John) Stambaugh, Topeka, and Jill (Dave) Watson, Kansas City, Missouri, 6 grandchildren are Jenee Barth, Joni Pro, Austin Thayer; Cora Spencer; Casey Conover and Chase Watson, and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents: Jim and Mary Murphy, and a sister Margaret Wilson. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Abilene, Kansas, Friday December 30, 2011 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Laney Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, Kansas, Thursday evening from 6:30-8:00 PM. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of service. Rhae requested in lieu of flowers, that memorials be given to the United Methodist Church, Abilene, the United Methodist Church, Belleville, or the Food and Clothing Center of Dickinson County.
