She died at the age of 94 years in her home, surrounded by her family. A true woman of God, a wife, grandmother, and friend, she leaves a strong and beautiful legacy to all those who know her. Mrs. Kirkland was born on August 21, 1916, in New Brockton, AL, to William Cornellis Stevens and Eathel Lowery Stevens. Rhoda attended school in Graceville. She married George Edward Kirkland of Graceville in 1931 in Donalsonville, GA. Rhoda was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Graceville since 1926. She taught Adult Sunday School for over 50 years and also served the Christ Ambassadors Youth Group for over 15 years. Rhoda is remembered most by her fervent love for the Lord and her desire for others to know Him. One of her fondest pastimes was working in her yards, producing the most vibrant and beautiful flowers in the area. For many years, area churches and homes were adorned with breathtaking bouquets arranged by her very hands. She was also a fantastic cook, creating many wonderful meals for others. She was known by those who love her as Mama Kirkland, Mudder, and Sister Rhoda. She fulfilled the words of her favorite scripture passage, found in 2 Timothy Chapter 2, verse 15, "study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Mrs. Kirkland was preceded in death by her husband, George Kirkland; her daughter, Jeanette Kirkland Corbitt; her grandson, Edward Lee Corbitt; her parents, William and Eathel Stevens; one brother, Tower Stevens; and three sisters, Thelma Stevens Law, Ethel Stevens Nolin, and Hilda Stevens Crutchfield. Rhoda has five children, Betty Kirkland Mitchell Palmer of Headland, the late Jeanette Kirkland Corbitt of Slocomb, George Rondel Kirkland of Denver City, Texas, Claude Richard Kirkland (Celia) of Potts-boro, Texas, and Janie Kirkland Franklin (Billy) of Dothan; and a son-in-law, S. A. "Red" Corbitt of Dothan. She has 11 grandchildren: Andrew James Mitchell (Lillian) of Headland; Elsie Mitchell Monk (Bobby) of Madison, Georgia; Patsy Mitchell Corbitt of Orlando; Deborah Corbitt Camp (Bobby) of Slocomb; Jan Corbitt Johnson (Tim) of Newton, Alabama; George Rondel Kirkland, Jr. (Shannon), of Lubbock, Texas; Kaaren Kirkland Rowland (Brent) of Whitewright, Texas; Douglas Richard Kirkland (Christie) of Sherman, Texas; Kristin Kirkland Hajny (Scot) of Mead, Texas; Melinda Franklin Boyd of Dothan; and Stephen Brent Franklin (Ann Marie) of Doha, Quatar. Rhoda also leaves 23 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews on both the Stevens and the Kirkland sides. She was also survived by a special friend, Queen Harrison. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M. at the Williams Funeral Home in Grace-ville, Florida. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at the First Assembly of God Church in Graceville, Interment will follow at Collins Old Mill Cemetery in Graceville.
