Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with Monsignor Ed Petty and the Rev. Phil Kruse officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a rosary recited at 4:30 p.m. He was born on July 16, 1936, in New Vienna, son of Ed and Dorothy (Oberbroeckling) Wessels. He spent his youth farming before enlisting in the Army. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He married Cheryl Casey on July 13, 1973, in Cascade. He worked as a finish grader for Herbie Steger. He later worked for Fangman Cabinets. He began the family business that would become Countertops, Inc., in 1994. He was actively involved in both his business and hobbies. Breeze enjoyed time spent with family and friends, including boating, fishing and aviation. As a pilot and member of Dyersville Aviation Inc., he was instrumental in the development and maintenance of Dyersville's two airports. Surviving are his wife, Cheryl; three sons, Jim (Mary) and Doug, both of Dyersville, and Matt, of Milwaukee; two daughters, Angie (Jamie) Pottebaum, of Dyersville, and Tracie Wessels, of Milwaukee; three grandchildren, Lilli and Gabe Wessels, and Alex Pottebaum; a sister, Ida Rose (La Vern) Sabers, of Earlville; and two brothers, Robert (Frances), of Holy Cross, and Francis "Hank," of Toddville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Dorothy; a brother, Ernest; and his father and mother-in-law, James and Alberta Casey. A Richard "Breeze" Wessels Memorial Fund has been established.
