Description	:	Pierschbacher Funeral Homes Richard Mason, 89, of Melcher-Dallas, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 14th, 2016 at Westridge Specialty Care, Knoxville, Iowa. A Military Graveside Interment will be Tuesday, May 17th, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dallas Cemetery. There will be a light lunch following the service at the New Hope United Methodist Church, 203 NW Center Street, Melcher, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Melcher American Legion Post 632. Richard was born to William and Mary Mason in Melcher-Dallas, Iowa on April 10, 1927. He attended Dallas High School and Simpson College. He enlisted in the Navy March 22nd, 1945 and served on the USS Bunker Hill Aircraft Carrier. Richard married Doris B. Long January of 1947. They had two children, Vicki and David. Richard worked as a Safety Engineer in the Insurance industry for years. He also worked as an Iowa Highway Patrol Officer and a Melcher Police Officer for a time. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 632 in Melcher. He served on the Board for the local Veterans Affairs Office. Richard recently did the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to see the WWII Memorial. He really was impressed with that trip. Richard and Doris were active members in the New Hope United Methodist Church in Melcher, until Doris’ death. Richard was an avid Hawkeye Fan. He would watch the TV, listen on the radio and kibitz with whoever was there watching the game with him. He enjoyed watching all kinds of sports games, visiting with Veterans, fishing in Canada and locally, and spending time with family.
