He was born January 30, 1948, in Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa, to Ross and Betty [Stevens] Porter. He married Marlene Kaster on September 09, 1978. He retired from the U.S. Army on August 31, 1989, after twenty years of service at the rank of staff sergeant. . He was preceded in death by his father and a brother; Butch. . Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Marlene; daughters, Gina Hauk and her husband, Brian, of Shelbyville, Indiana; Angela Hattabaugh and her husband, Dennis, of Georgetown, Texas; Shannon Cross of Temple; a son, Richard Porter of Kansas City, Kansas; his mother; Betty [Stevens] Porter of Atlantic, Iowa; and sisters, Cathy Porter-Maynard and her husband, David, of Minnesota; Cheri Pross and her husband, Michael, of Montana; and Anita Mundorf and her husband, George, of Iowa. . A soldier died a few nights ago, Tuesday, the 30th of November, 2010. He wasn't famous, he wasn't notorious for anything, and he wasn't heralded in the greater community at all. He was simply my friend, and if there was ever a finer man to lace a pair of combat boots, I sure never met him in my own 30 years of active duty. In fact, I'd dare say that if anyone cared to look up the definition of soldier in the celestial dictionary, you'd find Rick's picture along with it. The same goes for the words man, husband, and father -- and certainly for the word, friend. . Rick and I had some high adventures while serving together a long, long time ago, now, in the legendary 3rd Infantry Division, Rock of the Marne. We've been friends for so long now that it's hard to remember when we weren't. Rick retired long before I finally did, and it took a while to catch up with him again in person -- 1996, to be exact. He and Marlene are among the few people Donna and I cherish. Running amuck a little more slowly, perhaps, but our friendships have never faltered. I'm using the present tense purposefully, because in my opinion Rick will never be "gone" -- he's just not "right here" now. . Rick Porter faced many challenges at times, from being shot to pieces as a young grunt, to being betrayed once in a business arrangement and nearly wiped out, and into his final illness that none of us ever expected. He never lost. Instead, he always did what you'd expect a professional soldier and senior NCO to do even after the Army. He picked himself back up, dusted off, and faced things with his typical courage and conviction. He took care of Marlene and his family before himself. Now, if that doesn't define character, I must be a suck egg mule. I admire him so much that there simply aren't words, and since we sling the word "hero" around so much anymore, I won't even talk about it. I'll just say that Rick's life counted for something, and I'm proud to be the one to say it. . I'll miss my dear friend greatly for the rest of my own life, but Rick, if they have newspapers up there and you're wondering why I'm doing this, just snort one more time and save me a seat. Porter Awarded Bronze Star" . Army Specialist Four Richard A. Porter, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross J. Porter of Corning, received the Bronze Star medal April 22 at Ft. Riley, Kansas. . The award was presented by General James K. Woolnough, commanding general of the U.S. Continental Army Command. . Spec. Porter received the award for heroism in action against enemy forces in Vietnam on October 24, 1967. . The specialist is a clerk with the Medical Hilding Company of Irwin Army hospital at the Fort. He entered the army in March, 1967, completed basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas and served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division. He also holds the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart. The specialist graduated in 1965 from Corning Community High School and was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, Omaha, Neb., before entering the army. . Following is a text of the citation: . "Pvt. First Class Porter distinguished himself by heroic actions on 24 October 1967, while serving as a rifleman with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry on a search and destroy operation in the Ho Bo Woods, Republic of Vietnam. . "Private Porter's company was sweeping the dense jungle when a well-camouflaged Viet Cong tunnel was discovered. Private Porter immediately volunteered to search the tunnel complex, fully aware of recent enemy movement in the area. . "After entering the tunnel complex and crawling fifteen meters Private Porter's progress was halted by a large body of water. Private Porter, believing that the water led to another opening, returned to the surface and obtained a rope which he tied to his waist. . "Re-entering the tunnel he reached the water, submerging himself, and began swimming until he located the suspected opening. Upon entering the newly discovered vein Private Porter discovered several anti-tank mines and numerous enemy documents. . "Due to Private Porter's aggressive actions an enemy position was destroyed and valuable documents were captured. Private Porter's personal bravery, initiative and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military services and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the Unites States Army." . "The Ross Porter family drove to Fort Riley Kansas recently to attend the presentation of the Bronze star with "V" device for heroism to their son and brother, Specialist 4 Richard A. Porter. . He earned the award while serving with the 25th Inf. division in the Ho Bo Woods area. He discovered and explored a water-filled complex of underground tunnels, locating numerous anti-tank mines and valuable documents. The following day Pfc. Porter was severely injured in the chest and shoulder, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. .
