Description	:	Richard Anthony "Dick" Starke, 84, Helena, Mont., died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, in a Helena veterans hospital. He was born Jan. 3, 1930, to Anthony and Edith (Collins) Starke, in Valley City. He was reared and educated in Valley City and graduated from Valley City High School in 1948. Read More	Richard Anthony "Dick" Starke, 84, Helena, Mont., died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, in a Helena veterans hospital. He was born Jan. 3, 1930, to Anthony and Edith (Collins) Starke, in Valley City. He was reared and educated in Valley City and graduated from Valley City High School in 1948. He graduated from Valley City State College in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1952 and served as a pilot. He retired from the Air Force in 1972. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, he taught school in Minot Public Schools for three years. He was once married to Karen Whitlock. He graduated from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, with a degree in general industrial engineering before serving in Vietnam. He was a major in the Air Force and was a Silver Star recipient. He lived in Burlington from 1972 until 2011, when he moved to Montana where he resided until his death. He taught school in Plaza, Makoti and Kenmare. He was employed at Boeing Aircraft as an inspector at Minot Air Force Base in the late 1970s following his teaching career. He was the founder of the Medal of Honor Memorial at Roosevelt Park in Minot. He was a member of the Lutheran faith. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Arbor Day Foundation. He sang in the Nodakords for many years, where he served as assistant director for a time, and with the Flickertail Quartet. He was a gardener and orchard tender, a charter member of E.A.A., and received numerous awards for "Best of Show" fruit at the North Dakota State Fair. He rebuilt a "Stinson Reliant" airplane and was a gun collector. He also sang in the Western Plains Opera. Dick immensely enjoyed his annual hunting and fishing trips. That was the highlight of the year. He loved flying to the fly-ins in Oshgosh, Wis., and the fly-ins in North Dakota and Montana. He donated his Stinson Reliant to Minot Air Museum where it is on permanent display. He also enjoyed bowling and was president of the bowling team. He was fun to be with and he will be missed. Survivors: son, Eric Starke, Minneapolis; daughter, Stacy (David) Perez, in Texas; brother, Allan Starke, Helena; sister, Shirley Starke, Valley City; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Gene; sister-in-law, Jean Starke; son, Tony; nephew, Stuart Brown; sister, Grace Brown. A memorial service and burial, with a full military salute, will be held in the spring in Valley City. Source: Minot Daily News
