The retired Chevron petroleum distributor and local rancher was born May 23, 1931, at Pomeroy to Anthony (Tony) and Frances (Frankie) Van Ausdle Waldher. He graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1949 and married Meribeth Burnett on May 20, 1950, at Pomeroy. They then attended Washington State University at Pullman for one year. Dick and Meribeth returned to Pomeroy, where he went to work for his father at his Standard Oil distributorship. He purchased the family business in 1962 and retired in 1997. Dick farmed in the Dutch Flat area of Garfield County until his death. He raised wheat and Angus cattle for 53 years and received the Cattleman of the Year award in 1977. He was known for his purebred Angus production and was a visible presence at youth sporting and agriculture-related events. Dick coached the Holy Rosary Catholic School basketball A and B teams for 13 years, making it to the state tournament three times; coached many years of AAU girls and boys basketball teams; and could be found at Pomeroy High School track and field events with a stopwatch in hand as an official timer. He was an avid bowler and sponsored and bowled on his Standard Oil bowling team for 15 years. For years, he was actively involved in helping the Future Farmers of America members raise their animals and often loaned his barns and pasture to 4-H and FFA members who lived in town. Dick was instrumental in starting the Pomeroy FFA rotating chapter cow project and donated one of the first Angus cows to the chapter. He attended cattle shows and sales and was a member of the Washington State Angus Association for 45 years. Mr. Waldher assisted in starting the Washington State Junior Angus Association and was very active with the Junior Angus showdays and events. He also helped start the Pomeroy Booster Club. For many years, on his oil delivery routes, he would check in on the elderly people to see if they had any needs. Richard was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus; was a city councilman for eight years; president of the local Kiwanis Club; and was a previous member of the Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce. Following retirement from the petroleum business, Dick could be found checking his cattle or "helping out" at Doug's Repair until his time of passing. Dick particularly enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren and meeting with his 5 a.m. coffee buddies at Donna's Drive Inn. He is survived by his wife, Meribeth, at their ranch in Pomeroy; a daughter, Lisa E. Lund of Pomeroy; three sons, Mark D. Waldher and James R. Waldher, both of Pomeroy; and Chris A. Waldher, of Longview, Wash.; a daughter, Susan A. Collins, of Fruitland, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Mr. Waldher was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald F. Waldher. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richardson-Brown Funeral Home in Pomeroy. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Pomeroy by the Rev. Fernando Maldonado. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
