Description	:	SMITH, RICHARD ARTHUR SR.—Richard Arthur Smith Sr., was born August 19, 1892, at Exeter. He was the youngest of five children born to Prudence Jane Cox and William Morris Smith. His father was a miller by trade and Richard lived at various places where his father was working near McCool, Dorchester and Lushton. The store at that time was owned by Bert and E. E.... Read More	SMITH, RICHARD ARTHUR SR.—Richard Arthur Smith Sr., was born August 19, 1892, at Exeter. He was the youngest of five children born to Prudence Jane Cox and William Morris Smith. His father was a miller by trade and Richard lived at various places where his father was working near McCool, Dorchester and Lushton. Richard attended grade school south of Lushton, and graduated from high school in Lushton. In 1913, Richard started work at the grocery and general merchandise store in Lushton. The store at that time was owned by Bert and E. E. Franz. He worked there until February of 1935. On August 12, 1914, Richard was married to May Arminda Shaner at Overton. They made their home in Lushton until 1935. To this union were born two children, Nola Maxine on June 20, 1915, and Richard A. Smith Jr., on May 31, 1921. May Smith died at Geneva on December 4, 1953. Smith owned and operated a grocery store in Geneva from February of 1935 until he retired in 1963. At that time he moved to York where he married Esther Hays Moul in June of 1963. Esther died on March 14, 1967. On September 5, 1968, Smith was united in marriage with Bertha Bowker Counter, and they made their home in York until December of 1984, when they moved to Sutton Community Home because of Bertha’s ill health. Smith died in the home on July 24, 1987. Richard Smith was a devoted and loving husband and father. He was baptized in the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was a faithful member. He was active in community affairs, and was instrumental in organizing the Senior Citizens Club in York and served as the first president. He also served as a state officer. He also was proud of his membership in the Modern Woodmen of America Richard Smith is survived by his wife, Bertha, and by his children, Nola (Mrs. A. Birchard) Carter of Apache Junction, Az., and Richard Jr. of Grafton; and by grandchildren, Nola May Isaac of Houston Tex., Allison Carter of Woodland Hills, Cal., Denise Miller of Holdrege, Cheryl Boer of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steven Smith of Grafton; and by eight great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Monday, July 27, at Kohler Mortuary Chapel, Sutton, with the Rev. Lloyd Gross officiating. Special music selections were duets by Connie Jones and Lindell Hanthorn, “How Great Thou Art’ and “My Faith Looks up to Thee.” David Kauk was the organist Pallbearers were Steven Smith Robert Rath, David Boer, Thomas Rath, Dean Schinzel and Homer Brauning.
