"Dick" Haggin, 83, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Des Moines and Marshalltown, died Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Affinity House of natural causes. He was born December 31, 1930, in Marshalltown, son of Howard L. and Edythe L. Butson Haggin. He married Merna L. Jaquis August 26, 1956, in Des Moines. A graduate of Marshalltown High School, Dick worked at John Deere Waterloo Works for 30 years, retiring in 1987 as a tool and die maker. He served in the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command. He was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, where he was Sunday School superintendent; volunteered as a damage assessment specialist and served on the Emergency Services Committee for the American Red Cross; and was a member of UAW Local 838. Dick enjoyed fishing and hunting in Wyoming and Colorado. He was also an avid woodworker. Dick was awarded the Red Cross Volunteer of the Year in 1998 and was nominated for Cedar Valley Mayor’s Volunteer of the Year in 1998. In 2006, the Waterloo Exchange Club presented Dick with a flag which was previously flown at the U.S. Capitol in Washington in honor of his patriotism. He is survived by his wife, Merna of Waterloo; three daughters: Eileen (Gene) Cahall and Georgia (Darrell) Arant, both of Goose Creek, S.C., and Leslie (Dwight) Haverkamp of Dumont, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Haggin of Livermore, Calif. He was preceded in death by his brother, Glen. Dick’s love for his family was evident from the joy in his eyes and smile when he spoke of them. It was very important to him that he make a difference in their lives.
