Richard Berend Lauterbach, 92, was born 10 miles southeast of Iowa Falls, Iowa to Martin and Nell Ruth [Cross] Lauterbach. He went to country school at Pleasant Hill No. 9 School. He moved to a farm almost 4 miles west of Alden where he finished his 8th grade year at Breezy Hill No. 9 School. Richard attended high school in Iowa Falls, graduating in 1940. During that time, he wrestled and played football. He was chosen as an End on the All Conference Team and Honorable Mention on the State level. He won a Future Farmers of America public speaking contest held in Ames, Iowa, his senior year. Upon graduation, he was awarded The Plugger's Award/Scholarship of which he spoke fondly. Richard attended Ellsworth Community College and played basketball and baseball. He graduated in 1942 and worked for his father on the family farm. On Oct. 14, 1951, he married Elaine Meyer from rural Ackley, Iowa. They raised five children and enjoyed each of their activities. Richard enjoyed playing independent softball for many years. Richard and Elaine raised their family and continued to farm the family farm. He received the Master Pork Producer award. They were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alden. Some of his activities included serving as an Elder, Financial Secretary, Chairman of the Parsonage Building Committee and on the Board of Education at St. Paul's Church in Alden. He was also a member of the Lutheran Layman's League. He also served on the Alden Library Board, the Hardin County Farm Bureau Board, the Hardin County Fair Board and the Alden Parent Teachers Association. In 1982, Richard and Elaine moved to Iowa Falls, Iowa and retired from farming in 1987. They continued to place family as priority as they attended many of their grandchildren's activities. When time allowed, they enjoyed dancing. Richard Lauterbach is survived by his children; 16 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and a sister. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents, Martin and Nell Ruth Lauterbach, a brother, Lewis Lauterbach, and two sisters, Betty O'Brien and Harriet Hackbarth.
