Description	:	Richard (Dick) Burmester lived only about a year in the Antelope community before being killed while acting as Under-sheriff. Born in Ida Grove, Iowa in 1880, in 1903 he located at Glasgow, MT and in 1910 moved with his family to Culbertson where he engaged in the land-locating and real estate business. In 1912 the family moved to Antelope where, with his brother-in-law he engaged in the hotel business. Read More	Richard (Dick) Burmester lived only about a year in the Antelope community before being killed while acting as Under-sheriff. Born in Ida Grove, Iowa in 1880, in 1903 he located at Glasgow, MT and in 1910 moved with his family to Culbertson where he engaged in the land-locating and real estate business. In 1912 the family moved to Antelope where, with his brother-in-law he engaged in the hotel business. Following the formation of Sheridan County and the election of 1913, Dick Burmester was named Under-sheriff. He accompanied Tom Courtney to Mondak on April 4th to assist in the apprehension of a negro working on the Great Northern bridge across the Missouri. In the attempted arrest, the suspect shot and killed Courtney and then quickly turned his gun on the deputy. He continued to empty his gun into the two men, then picked up Burmester's gun and ran for a clump of willows with shots from all quarters following him. Burmester was found to be still living and a special train was dispatched to Williston, ND to take him to the hospital, but to no avail; he die4d at 10:28. Neither Courtney nor Burmester realized they were after a man of this character. The charge against him was nothing to warrant any resistance; consequently they were not prepared as they would have been had they been arresting a man on a more serious charge.
