Description	:	It is thought by various researchers that Richard married Jane Mobbs around 1849, although a source to confirm this is lacking from many geneaological websites where that date is repeated, and no marriage record has yet been identified in the NSW BDM Marriages Index. Richard & Jane's first known child, James Marshall, was born in 1851 (confirmed by the NSW BDM Birth Index). Richard was a stonemason, and was involved in the construction of (old) St Paul's Anglican Church, at 346A Marsden Road, Carlingford NSW. He both quarried and dressed the stones for the church at his property... He both quarried and dressed the stones for the church at his property near Jenkins Road, Carlingford. The church was consecrated and opened on 4 July 1850, and is listed in the New South Wales State Heritage Register ( apps.environment.nsw.gov.au/dpcheritageapp/ViewHeritageItemDetails.aspx?ID=5045460 ). The Sydney Morning Herald, Fri 14 Jun 1878, Page 8. trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13418574 REPORT OF INQUEST JUNE 15TH.— An inquest on the body of Richard Charles Marshall was held by the district coroner (Mr. J. E. Bowden) on Friday, the 14th instant, at Pennant Hills. Jane Marshall, the first witness, identified the body as that of her husband, a stonemason by trade, a native of Parramatta, and 55 years of age : on the previous day walked with deceased, who was then in his usual health to Parramatta: went to Shaytor's public-house, Church-street; deceased took a couple of glasses of rum, and went out on the verandah and listened to some music a man was playing outside ; he asked for money for the man which witness gave him, and almost directly afterwards deceased fell; witness and her eldest son picked up deceased ; he did not speak ; went away to wet a handkerchief to bathe his head ; on returning found a constable and another man who holding him up ; deceased was bleeding from the ear; by the constable's permission deceased was brought home in a cart ; he talked part of the road home ; next day (Sunday) he was better ; on Monday worse, and was then evening ; complained of a pain in his head, and sent for the doctor on Monday night ; deceased died at a-quarter to 8 yesterday morning; deceased was in no quarrel while at the public house ; no one struck or touched him ; when he fell he struck his head heavily on the footpath; he had complained of swimming in the head on two previous occasions, but he did not fall ; am quite satisfied there was no foul play practised on deceased at Shaytor's. Isaac Waugh, a legally qualified medical practitioner, residing in Parramatta, deposed to his having seen deceased on Wednesday afternoon ; had been sent for on the previous Monday, but not being able to attend, had got Dr. Smith to visit ; was again sent for on Wednesday morning and went; found at about 3 p.m. deceased was dying; from what Dr. Smith had told me felt certain there was no chance of his recovery; found deceased perfectly delirious, evidently suffering from effusion on the brain ; am of opinion the blow deceased received in falling occasioned the rupture of a blood vessel on the brain and that the consequent effusion was the cause of death ; saw no signs of violence on the body excepting a little wound on the back of the ear which would probably result from the fall which has been described. The jury returned a verdict that deceased died at his residence, on the 13th February, from effusion on the brain, caused by rupture of a blood vessel on the brain, the result of an accidental fall. Mention of the Pennant Hills range of hills exists as early as 1800. The suburb today called Pennant Hills (some 7km to the NNE of Carlingford) was named later, the village forming up after 1887, around a new railway station connecting that location to the city.
