Description	:	Richard Conkright Jr first appears in some of the early tax lists of Barlow, Washington County, Ohio where in about 1817 his father and uncle had purchased 160 acres. He is taxed for one horse. It is believed that he was a school teacher because he is listed once as a professor. He purchased a plow and saddle from his father's estate in 1848. Read More	Richard Conkright Jr first appears in some of the early tax lists of Barlow, Washington County, Ohio where in about 1817 his father and uncle had purchased 160 acres. He is taxed for one horse. It is believed that he was a school teacher because he is listed once as a professor. He purchased a plow and saddle from his father's estate in 1848. About 1850, Richard followed the Stanton family, his sister Lydia having married Nathan Stanton, to Appanoose County, Iowa. In 1853 he is recorded as the first teacher in the first school house which was also the meeting house of the Wesleyian Methodist Church. The church members, including Lydia and Nathan Stanton, were all operators of the Underground Railroad out of Missouri through Appanoose County, Iowa. School teachers were not supposed to be married. Richard Jr. finally got married for the first time to Cynthia Brown, nee Spillers, sometime in 1853 after her husband had died. She already had several children by Brown. Between 1853 and 1859 Cynthia bore 3 children by Richard, 2 surviving to adulthood - Olive,b.1854 and Ruth Ann (Jane) b.1856. The last record of Richard was in 1857 when he purchased 40 acres in Putnam County, Missouri from the government. He does not appear in the 1860 Census.
