Buz was born March 5, 1937 in Mount Vernon, Washington to parents John J. Peth Jr. and Florence Handstad Peth. He grew up on the family ranch in Bow, Washington. He attended Edison Elementary School and Burlington-Edison High School, graduating in 1955. In high school, Buz excelled in football and wrestling, winning a state wrestling championship in 1955. He continued wrestling after high school and was the PNW YMCA Wrestling Champion and received the "Outstanding Wrestler" award in 1957. He also placed 1st at the 1964 Skagit Valley College State Junior Championship. He was inducted into the Burlington-Edison Hall of Fame in 2006 for his athleticism in football and wrestling. Buz married Linda Haynes in 1955, and they worked and lived on the family ranch together, with their children Kirk, Kim and Kelly until 1974. Following in his family's footsteps, Buz became interested in rodeo. He was a true believer in "practice makes perfect" and could be seen most evenings, practicing calf roping and steer wrestling in his arena with friends and family. He joined the RCA in the mid 1960's and participated for decades in calf roping, steer wrestling and other timed events throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada. He attended the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City in 1969. He won all-around events and awards at many rodeos, including the Inaugural Harley Tucker Award in St. Paul and Leo Moomaw All-Around Trophies in Omak. In 1977, he won the Columbia River Circuit All-Around Title. He was inducted into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2013. Buz always made time to help his children and grandchildren with school projects, 4-H projects, and sports. He loved sharing his knowledge of wrestling, roping, and steer wrestling with anyone interested in learning. He worked on the family farm and ranch until retiring. He moved to Odessa, Washington to enjoy a quieter lifestyle. In retirement, he wintered in Tonopah and Wickenburg, Arizona, where Buz team roped and participated in the Senior Pro Rodeo Circuit, well into his 70s. Buz enjoyed every aspect of rodeo and the friendships he created along the way. Buz returned to Skagit County in 2014, where he connected with old friends and spent time with his grandchildren and family. In the last few years, he especially enjoyed lunches out with Tim and Meg Smith, Terry Scott, and Brian and Barb West. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jerry, Ted and Wick; sisters Darlene and Sharon; sons Kirk and Kim Peth; and nephews Brian Johnson, Brad Anderson, and Steve Anderson. The family would like to thank the loving staff at Homeplace Memory Care in Burlington and Hospice of the Northwest for the wonderful care they provided. A Graveside service will be held at Bow Cemetery on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 11:00 AM.
