Read More	MITCHELL POLICE JUDGE, VICTIM OF POLIO, DIES MITCHELL--Richard Emerson, 31, police judge and justice of the peace at Mitchell, died late Friday night at a Scottsbluff Hospital. A victim of polio, he had been stricken by the dreaded disease nearly four years ago. He spent considerable time in an iron lung in a Scottsbluff hospital when first afflicted by the disease. The Scottsbluff County Chapter of the Polio Foundation had taken much interest in the Mitchell man's condition and had him flown to Warm Springs, Ga., for treatment. He was provided with a motorized wheel chair, braces and a hoist. He had been elected police judge and justice of the peace in 1956 and re-elected for another term in 1958. He dispensed justice from his wheel chair and his cheery disposition drew praise from many Mitchell citizens. He was born at Westerville, Neb., June 10, 1927. He attended public schools there until moving to the North Platte Valley at the age of 14. He was a graduate of Liberty High School and had attended Scottsbluff College. He married Wanda Gompert Feb. 28, 1946, at Lusk, Wyo. The family had resided in Mitchell since. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge at Mitchell. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Rickie, Jerry and Tommy; one daughter, Sandra, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Fred Scoggan of Morrill; two brothers, Jack Emerson and Bill Emerson of Crescent City, Calif.; his father of Crescent City; three sisters, Mrs Betty Hammack and Judy Emerson of Morrill and Mrs. Bonnie Schumaker of Bremmerhaven, Germany; three step-brothers and four step-sisters. Leonard Harrison, chairman of the Scotts Bluff County Chapter of the Polio Foundation, and Dr. Edwin J. Loeffel of Mitchell, Emerson's physcian, both praised the high morale he had displayed despite his illness. "If I had a statement to make," Dr. Loeffel said Saturday, "it would be that Dick's case points to why people should go and get their polio immunization shots." Services for Mr. Emerson will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church in Mitchell. The Rev. Wade Scott Jr. will officiate. Fisher Mortuary in Mitchell is in charge of arrangements.
