Hubert, 22, Concordia, was killed Thursday afternoon in a freak accident on the US 156 bridge at the northeast edge of this Ellsworth county community of 650. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Ellsworth county Veterans Memorial hospital in Ellsworth, about 12 miles northeast of Holyrood. Highway Patrol troopers said Mr. Hubert was doing bridge repair work with a Kansas Department of Transportation crew, and was standing beside a DOT truck operated by Raymond W. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Ellsworth county Veterans Memorial hospital in Ellsworth, about 12 miles northeast of Holyrood. Highway Patrol troopers said Mr. Hubert was doing bridge repair work with a Kansas Department of Transportation crew, and was standing beside a DOT truck operated by Raymond W. Brown, Glasco, when the mishap occurred at 4 pm. A 6-by-12-foot steel plate was being hoisted from Brown's truck, troopers said, when a semi-trailer rig driven by Ernest Kessler, East Chicago, Ind., drove by in the single lane open to traffic at the work site. Kessler's rig struck the steel plate, spinning it around and crushing Hubert between the plate and the side of Brown's truck. Troopers said a flagman was controlling traffic at the scene, but the semi rig was apparently too wide to clear the plate as it swung from the hoist on the north side of the highway. The funeral for Mr. Hubert will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, Concordia, the Rev. Loran Werth officiating. Burial will be in St. Concordia cemetery. Mr. Hubert was born Nov. 27, 1954, at Concordia. He was graduated from Concordia high school in 1974 and held a green belt in karate. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hubert, and twin sisters, Sharon and Karon Hubert, all of the home; 2 brothers, Duane, Salina, and Ronald L., Salina, and a grandmother, Mrs. Clarine Hubert, Concordia. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Chaput-Buoy funeral home chapel, Concordia.
