Read More	"I am glad I will not be young in a future without wilderness." -Aldo Leopold Richard Venable (Dick), 94, of Missoula, passed from the earth on Thursday, July 15, 2021, at St. Patrick's Hospital. He was a life-long resident of Montana. Dad was born on September 22, 1926, in Anaconda to Herman and Irene Venable. He grew up in Miles City during the depression, when money was as scarce as rainstorms. He attended Custer County High School, graduating in 1945. His high school years and WWII were one and the same, and Dad built memories of hard times and good times and long-term friendships during those years. After high school, Dad attended college in Bozeman for a year and then worked a number of jobs, always following the advice of his uncle to avoid work that required long-handled tools: seismograph crew member; bartender at the Texas Club (the family business); civil engineer technician; draftsman for Trane; surveyor for an irrigation system in the Powder River basin and for the Bureau of Reclamation. In 1951, Dad joined the 934th Engineer Aviation Unit, a group of reserve Army Engineers attached to the Air Force, and attended Engineer School at Ft. Belvoir, FL. Soon, the 934th was activated and assigned to Ft. Huachuca, AZ, then shipped to Suwon, Korea, to build a forward air base. Sgt.1st Class R.M. Venable was honorably discharged in 1953 with two bronze service stars and the United Nations Service Medal. Dad met the love of his life, Norma Hertz, in 1953 while attending the University of Montana. They married on March 18, 1954. When Dad graduated with a degree in forest economics in 1957, they began their U. S. Forest Service career at Seeley Lake. Subsequent ranger station assignments included Lolo, Darby, West Fork, and Philipsburg. In 1980, Dad transferred to a management position in Missoula, where he retired from the Forest Service after 34 years in March,1984. After retirement, he worked for Fidelity Real Estate, and as a cartographer for the State Department of Revenue, retiring in 2002. Dad was a member of several organizations, including the Elks, Masons, and Presbyterian Church. His hobbies and interests were many: Grizzly football, woodworking, music, painting, Civil War history, reading, writing, gardening and more. His memoir, "The Cross-eyed Kid from Cottonwood Creek," relates his years in eastern Montana and Korea and showcases the Venable family talent for storytelling. He enjoyed building and creating and wanted us to do the same, no matter what medium we chose to work in. Dad always encouraged us to take the extra step and do better, whether it was career, education, or personal life. He was very proud of us and often bragged about our accomplishments. Whenever a crisis arose or a favor was needed, Dad didn't hesitate to help out, whether it was family or friend. Our father is survived by his beloved feline companion, Eddy/Eddie; his brother Herman (Diane) Venable, Gresham, OR; and four daughters and their families, Marilee (Gerry) Galligan, Roy, WA; Nancy Venable, Billings, MT; Rebecca (Phil) Sevores, Tucson, AZ; and Heidi (Steve) Clark, Fruita, CO. Grandchildren include James McLaughlin, Amanda and Erik Thompson, Jessie Edwards and Doug Adams. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by Norma, his wife of 58 years, and his sister MaryJean (Venable) Bertrand, her husband Jim, and their children Mike and Kitty. A celebration for Richard Venable, the cross-eyed kid from Cottonwood Creek, will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 235 South 5th St. W., Missoula, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 28. A light luncheon will follow. Dad will be interred with Mom at Mountain View Cemetery in St. Ignatius in a private ceremony. Published by The Montana Standard, Butte, MT on Sunday, August 1, 2021
