Driver of Four Horse Team Terribly Injured When They Take Fright and Run Away. Dies Soon After Reaching Hospital. Richard H. Woodger, an employee of W. K. Floweree, on the latter's ranch, met a horrible death yesterday as the result of a runaway of a four-horse team which was being driven by Woodger on the road leading from Great Falls to Highland cemetery yesterday morning about 10:30. No other person was injured, though half a dozen men were in the wagon when the runaway occurred. The lead team broke loose from the wagon and got away but the wheel horses did not go far after the driver was thrown from the seat. T. W. Ross, foreman for Mr. Floweree, was taking a team on a trip to the Little Belt mountains, to get some sheep. Woodger was going as driver. They stopped at the city jail yesterday morning for half a dozen laborers and had started on the journey and were about a mile from the city limits traveling on the "Red Road" when the horses became frightened and shied, so that Woodger was thrown from the seat. Just how he hit the ground or whether the wheel of the wagon ran over him, no one knew but when he was found the top of his head was terribly crushed and he was unconscious and apparently dying. Fred Andretta was passing at that point on his way into the city at the time the accident happened and hurried to the W. H. George company's office with a view to have the company send their ambulance sent to bring the victim to the hospital. Deputy Sam French went with Mr. George's man to the scene of the accident. They found the victim beside the road and in such condition that it seemed unlikely he would live until the ambulance reached the hospital. No time was lost in getting the man to the Deaconess hospital where a surgeon was called to attend him. He was given all possible aid, but to no avail. He died shortly after noon yesterday. There is nothing known of Woodger's family, so far as the officers are concerned, though it is hoped that word will be received today from sources that have been asked for information, and that his relatives may be located. He had been working on the Floweree ranch only a short time and Mr. Ross, the foreman, did not know anything about the man. 19 Sept 1916--Persistent attempts on the part of Undertaker George and the county authorities to locate relatives of Dick Woodger have failed. Woodger received fatal injuries in a runaway accident a short distance from town two days ago.
