Description	:	Richard E. Olinger passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Golden Living Center in Salem surrounded by his family. He had reached the age of 83 years, 8 months, and 6 days. Richard was born on April 23, 1924 to John and Ellen (Johnson) Olinger, on a farm in rural McCook County, near Salem, SD. At the age of six, his family moved to a farm north of Center where he spent the remainder of his life farming. Olinger passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Golden Living Center in Salem surrounded by his family. He had reached the age of 83 years, 8 months, and 6 days. Richard was born on April 23, 1924 to John and Ellen (Johnson) Olinger, on a farm in rural McCook County, near Salem, SD. At the age of six, his family moved to a farm north of Center where he spent the remainder of his life farming. He was educated at Carlson country school and confirmed at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church at Center in 1939. He served with the US Navy during WWII with duty in the Pacific Theater and the West Coast. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to farming. On September 13, 1953, he married Marilyn Begalka in Clear Lake, SD. Together they raised six children. Richard enjoyed farming, raising cattle and his special farm cats and dogs. He also enjoyed attending auction sales. He loved music, especially old church hymns, which he played at home. Richard was a member of Ramsey Baptist Church, where he served on the Trustee and Cemetery Boards. He was also a member of the Salem American Legion and the Lake County Weed Board. Richard is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Salem; three sons: Brad (Merry) of Madison, SD, Rick of Colton, SD, and Darrin of San Antonio, TX; three daughters: Lynette (Art) Witkowski of Portland, OR, Peggy (James) Deremo of Fargo, ND, and Lori (Denis) Friederich of Boiling Springs, SC; 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; three brothers: John, formerly of Miller, SD and now in Oregon, Marvin (Eva) of Sioux Falls, and Harold (Krystal) of Rapid City; and one sister, Adeline Tenold of Spearfish. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, L. Martin, Clarence, and Robert. Funeral services for Richard Olinger will be held on Wednesday, January 2 at 11:00 AM at Ramsey Baptist Church, rural Montrose. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 1, with family present from 6-8 pm at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.
