Description	:	Richard E. "Rich" Schmit, age 65, of Castlewood, SD, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown with Father Michael Wensing officiating. Music will be furnished by Becky Lubbers as song leader and Donna Williams as organist. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a rosary on Tuesday at the Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Richard Edward Schmit was born on April 28, 1949 to Peter and Anna (Feyereisen) Schmit in Watertown, SD. He grew up in rural Watertown and attended school in Castlewood, graduating from Castlewood High School in 1967. On September 25, 1971 he married Roxan Lien in the Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown and they made their home in rural Castlewood. Rich was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church. Rich and Roxan raised their children on the farm. Rich was very involved with 4-H, serving as a 4-H leader and being involved with his children showing cattle, dedicating time for showing cattle at the State Fair for many years. He made it a priority to attend his children's extracurricular events and enjoyed watching all their ball games. Rich has been milking cows since he was 11 years old, and over the past 54 years he has rarely missed a morning or evening shift, even milking all the cattle the days of his children's weddings. In addition to farming, he served on the AMPI Board numerous years and was a Prospect Show board member. Rich enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and woodworking. Rich was a dairy farmer in rural Castlewood until the present time. Rich shared his love of life and farming with his family. The grandchildren especially loved coming to Grandpa and Grandma's house, riding in the trucks, helping with harvest, jumping on the hay bales, helping with the milk cows, and feeding the calves. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Roxie; his children and grandchildren, Jeffrey (Cindy) Schmit, Brandon and Trentyn of Volga, SD, Thomas (Marie) Schmit, Kiana, Kaylee, and Kendallyn of Elkton, SD, and Amy (Aaron) Singrey, Dylan, Preston, and Caden of Arlington, SD; his siblings, Nick (Donna) Schmit, Dan Schmit, Anne (Ray) Ries, Ken (Judy) Schmit all of Watertown, SD, and Cindy (Dave) Hahler of Webster, SD; sisters-in-law Anita Ornes of Watertown, SD and Ronae (Burt) Tesch of Hayti, SD; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Randall Ollie Schmit, his parents, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy and Jeanne Lien.
