Burial will follow at the Holyoke Cemetery. Richard E. Brown, son of Claude Z. and Aquelina (Sisto) Brown, was born in Wymore, Nebraska, January 13, 1927. Rich graduated from Wymore High School in 1944. When in Seventh grade Rich started his first job as a show shine boy at Darnold's Shoe Repair getting a nickel from every ten cent shoe shine plus any of the rare tips. By his freshman year he had advanced to a position behind the bench where he learned the shoe repair trade. His job lasted until high school graduation. He enlisted in the Army Reserve when seventeen and was called to active duty twelve days after his eighteenth birthday and served on active duty two years, fourteen months of it overseas in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged as a S/Sgt. December 1946. He received the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Army Occupation Medal. While attending the University of Nebraska for two semesters he worked for the Lincoln Orthopedic Appliance Company making custom braces, most of them for young polio patients. The sadness working with young polio victims was tempered by their happiness when the new braces let them begin to learn to walk again. Rich then enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard taking a full time position as an Administrative Assistant and, after being promoted to Warrant Officer, served as Battalion Personnel Officer in the 195th Heavy Tank Battalion. Rich married Jean Lock from Lamar, Nebraska in Lincoln on June 8, 1948, the day after she graduated from the University of Nebraska. When Jean entered the University she promised her parents she wouldn't get married until after graduation. Their son Michael was born May 13, 1950. They lived in Lincoln until Rich left the National Guard and they moved to Imperial, Nebraska in 1951 for Jean to teach and Rich joined Jean's father and brother in their farming operation. During some of the winters he supplemented his income driving trucks on long hauls or rough necking on oil rigs. Their next move was to Holyoke in 1957 where jean accepted a teaching job while Rich continued farming until 1959 when he accepted a job in the Holyoke Post Office as a clerk and in 1963 as a rural letter carrier. He retired from the Postal Service November 30, 1990. Rich joined the Colorado Rural Letter Carriers' Association in 1963 where he held state offices for 33 years including 18 years as state secretary/treasurer and 29 years as state editor. They attended 34 national conventions giving them the opportunity to visit most of the United States and to make many friends. Following his retirement Rich took a job with Tennant Funeral Homes and Gerk Funeral Homes after a change of ownership. Rich again had a job where he felt he could help people. He was active in the Holyoke community as a member of the American Legion Post #90, VFW Post #6482, Holyoke Memorial Hospital Foundation, Holyoke Music Parents, Holyoke Arts Council, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Parish Council, Choir, and Knights of Columbus. Rich is survived by son, nephews, and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean (over 63 years), brother William Brown, and sisters Margaret Brown, Lois Woodling, and Helen Fauver, and many friends.
