Description	:	Richard Fred Nerud "Poor Dick", 86, formerly of Minatare, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Western Nebraska Veteran's Home in Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 6, 2011 at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff with Pastor Ron Nuss-Warren officiating. Inurnment will follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Minatare. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the Minatare Library. Poor Dick, as he was fondly called by those that knew him, was born July 7, 1924, in Minatare, Nebraska to Frank and Alice (Mowry) Nerud. He was united in marriage to Maxine Fay Fields at her family's home in Bayard on March 29, 1942. To this union two children were born, Steve and Sharon. He served in the United States Army from 1945 until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Dick started his own business, "Poor Dick's Wrecking Yard" in Minatare in 1949. He later sold the business in 1994. Dick was very active in the Minatare community and was involved in several organizations including the American Legion, the East Lawn Cemetery Board, and the Minatare City Council. He had a great passion for Nebraska Cornhusker football. Dick also enjoyed stock car racing and was one of the first to participate in the races at the Scottsbluff airport. He had the honor of at least two awards for Top Car of the Year. He will always be remembered for sharing his jokes. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include his son, Steve Nerud of Bayard; daughter, Sharon (Bob) Koch of El Mirage, AZ; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine of 60 years; daughter in law, Sharon "Toots" Nerud; brothers, Louie, Edward, Robert, and Tom; and sisters, Bernice Wallen and Jean Durnall.
