"Bing" O'Brien, 77, of Carroll died Friday, July 4, 2008, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a short illness. Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with the Rev. James McCormick presiding. Casket bearers will be Pat O'Brien, Mike O'Brien, Denny O'Brien, Jon O'Brien, Mike Thielen and Mike O'Brien. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Visitation started at 4 this afternoon and a Christian wake service will be held at 7 tonight at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Visitation will resume at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A son of George and Christine (Schueller) O'Brien, he was born Dec. 29, 1930, at Carroll, attended St. Joseph School here and was a lifelong resident of Carroll. Mr. O'Brien worked for a railroad then enlisted in the Army during the Korean Conflict, serving from 1952 to 1954. He earned the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He and Alice M. Wilberding were married Oct. 1, 1960, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. Mr. O'Brien worked for construction companies then worked for the City of Carroll Street Department for 27 years until retiring in 1992. He was diagnosed with bone cancer in May. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and a 50-year member of Maurice Dunn American Legion Post No. 7 of Carroll. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, going to casinos and taking winter bus trips to Florida, Texas and Arizona. Mr. O'Brien was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Donald, Eugene, William and John O'Brien; three sisters: Helen, Madeline and Phyllis Hoffman; a sister-in-law, Linda O'Brien; a brother-in-law, Edwin Hoffman; and a nephew, Kenneth Hoffman.
