Description	:	AUGUSTA - Richard G. "Porky" Martin, 90, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at his home following a long illness. He was born in Augusta on Nov. 1, 1920, a son of the late Frank D. Martin and Amanda (Migneault) Martin, the fourth of six children. He was educated in Augusta schools and joined the National Guard in the late '30s. The Guard became a unit of Company F, 103rd Infantry of the 43rd Division in 1938 and participated in World War II. "Porky" Martin, 90, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at his home following a long illness. He was born in Augusta on Nov. 1, 1920, a son of the late Frank D. Martin and Amanda (Migneault) Martin, the fourth of six children. He was educated in Augusta schools and joined the National Guard in the late '30s. The Guard became a unit of Company F, 103rd Infantry of the 43rd Division in 1938 and participated in World War II. He spent four years in the South Pacific theater, where he was seriously wounded during the New Georgia campaign and for which he received the Purple Heart. He also received the Bronze Star for valor. He was honorably discharged in 1945. During most his life, he was self-employed in the plumbing and heating trade. He retired at age 62 He was predeceased by brothers Arthur, Frankie, Wallace and Frank A.; and one sister, Thelma O. Garcia. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carmelita; three sons, Michael A. and wife Mary Lou of Winslow, Peter D. and wife Lynda of Sidney, and Paul J. and wife Julie of Arlington, Wash.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Committal prayers and burial with military honors will be in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. (Morning Sentinel 10/8/2011)
