Baer of Denison township had answered the last call and passed away at his home in Coon Grove Friday morning, Oct. 9, 1936 after a protracted illness. Richard Galey Baer was born in Clinton, Iowa, on April 26, 1866, the third son of Andrew Baer and Jane Kelly Baer, and when he was four years of age he came to Crawford county with his parents and brothers and sisters in a covered wagon train and the family settled on a farm in Friends Grove about three miles south of Denison. The country was new at that time and mostly unbroken open prairie or timber land and as a boy he herded cattle over much of the land that is now settled and farmed south of Denison. On June 25, 1890, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Alice Martha Riddle and to this children were born, eleven children, consisting of three sons and eight daughters. Shortly after their marriage the young couple set up housekeeping in the old home farm in Friends Grove, but about five years later moved to Gladstone, Manitoba, Canada, where they lived several years, then returned to Crawford county, Iowa, to a farm in Denison township where they have lived ever since and where for the last few years they conducted a small oil station on Highway 59 about four miles south of Denison. He, together with the late Charles K. Meyers of Denison, organized a Sunday school in Coon Grove where faithfully for many years he endeavored to lead the young people of the neighborhood in the right way and to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. His many friends and neighbors will vouch for him as a man of honesty and integrity, and ever ready to help those in need or distress or to lend a hand to a neighbor, and as a true follower of an upright and Christian life. He passed away at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 13 days, and his death is keenly felt by all of his family as no personal sacrifice had ever seemed too great in him for them.
