Happel will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday July 2, 2014 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 320 East Street in Latimer and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to the Hospice of North Iowa. Richard Happel was the oldest of seven children born to Theodore and Clara (Clausen) Happel on January 12, 1922, in rural Linn County by Cedar Rapids, Ia. In high school his family moved to a farm neat Latimer in north central Iowa where he attended Franklin Consolidated Schools. He loved playing baseball in his younger days and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He worked in Waterloo during the winter and helped farm from spring to fall before being drafted into the service. He served his country during post WWII in Japan as an MP. Upon returning he began farming with his dad. On March 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lois Ann Lau. They farmed together in rural Alexander until her passing on Dec. 30, 1990. In the following years he enjoyed living on the farm until his move in January 2013 to assisted living in Hampton. During those years he enjoyed traveling; especially with his children and their families. He was a member of the CAL Education Foundation and a supporter of rural education. He pursued and proudly completed his high school GED, receiving his certificate before family and friends. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He followed their many activities and pursuits throughout the years. He also developed a passion for dancing that allowed him to meet many new people. Richard is survived by his children, daughter Janet Brown (Dennis) of Newhall, son Ron Happel (Kris) of Forest City; grandchildren Liska Hermann (Jerry) of Plymouth, MN, Erin Brown of Minneapolis, MN, Jonathan, Daniel, and Sarri Happel of Forest City; great-grandchildren Wesley and Gweneth Hermann of Plymouth. He is also survived by his brothers Paul Happel (Kathy), Alfred Happel (Norma), Lester Happel (Alma), and sister Helen Jorgenson (Jim); sisters-in-law Ramona Schmidt and Phyllis Lau; good friend, Delores Decker of Mason City, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois, a brother George and a sister Elaine, who died in childhood, brothers and sisters-in-laws Paul and Velma Lau, Verner and Velma Lau and Alan Lau.
