Dick was born February 15, 1929 to Charles and Florence Harper in the family home in Connell. He was one of 11 siblings. Dick attended schools in Connell, graduating from Connell High School in 1948. Read More	Richard (Dick) Gerald Harper, of Connell, Washington, passed away March 5, 2011 in Salem, Oregon. He was 82. Dick was born February 15, 1929 to Charles and Florence Harper in the family home in Connell. He was one of 11 siblings. Dick attended schools in Connell, graduating from Connell High School in 1948. During the Korean War, he was drafted into the army, serving in Germany. He married Joyce Gourley in 1956. They had 3 sons. Dick worked for the Washington State Highway Department until he retired in 1986. Over the last ten years, he spent much of his time in Brooks, Oregon, with his companion, Helen Malby. Dick loved many things and many people. Camping and fishing were his passions, along with American Legion and 40+8 service. A Harper family tradition, Dick had been going to Fishtrap Lake with his brothers, sons and plenty of friends and other family members, for over 40 years. It was a week filled with stories, card games, boat rides, oh, and a bit of fishing. Dick was in charge of the Cook Shack, planning and preparing meals for everyone who came. Dick was very proud of his military service in Germany during the Korean War. He met and served with brave men from all over the country, and many he met became life-long friends. Dick was also proud of his many years with the State Highway Department. He spent many cold, snowy nights sanding roads and plowing snow around our community. Family is probably what brought Dick the most enjoyment, particularly in his later life. He was very proud of his parents' and siblings and their history in Connell and his children and grandchildren brought him much joy. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, 2 young sisters and brothers Hank, Cleo and Sam. He is survived by sisters Pat Gleich of Kennewick, Shirlene (John) Mason and Nancy (Roger) Lewis of Connell, brothers Norval (Gloria) Harper, Tuck (Carole) Harper of Connell, and sons Dan Harper (Lori Stiner), Willy (Kelley) Harper, and their children, Matt, Travis, Keneesha and BradLee, of Connell, Dale (Gina) Harper and their daughter Claire, of Kennewick, companion Helen Malby of Brooks, Oregon, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 12 at 10:00 a.m. (viewing at 9:00 a.m.) at the Connell Church of the Nazarene, with a graveside service and reception to follow.
