Description : Author. The son of Francis Dana, he graduated from Harvard and became a lawyer, but built his fame as a writer and critic. A founder of the "North American Review," Dana's criticisms were somewhat controversial in his day: he was a proponent of Romanticism, despised didacticism, and disagreed with the Transcendental movement. His 1821 novel "Paul Felton" is considered one of the earliest examples of Gothic fiction in the United States.
